Back in the day dropships didn't bother to unload behind cover. They just didn't used to carry large lasers, but mediums. Heck some of 'em didn't even bother to fire.
Imagine sulfurous rift, now take away the defender's hidden drop point. There are three large open area on that map specifically for dropping off defenders. So no, nothing new, just the flavour changed.
As for getting shot in your dropzone, this most often happens when a team sits back and sets up a defensive position right by their dropzone. Should the opfor manage to win the engagement, they've no where else to go but your dropzone to shoot mechs. Try to convince your team to set up an initial forward defense line, and then, when you bring in your second mech, you'll've the time needed to regroup.
Also shooting one's way to the dropzone, it happens when your team engages a more organized team piecemeal. A few mechs engaging at a time'll get ground down before getting much done. Some matches'll have one team fighting six different 2v12 combats leading the opposition to the dropzone in a little trail of broken mechs. Try and get your team to stick together more.
