The pinnacle is when two teams of 12 have a Lan party on the summit of mount Everest, and one side wins.

In my opinion, the pinnacle of play in this game is being good enough to be competent in both a 1v1 scenario (think MWA), and a team based scenario (think MRBC or MWOWC I guess). While also being good enough to be recognized amongst the general player base of the game as well as your peers (other comp teams and comp players as well as obviously your own team) as a strong player.

Team play is really the pinnacle since it requires a more complete set of skills. Positioning, situational awareness, and timing are a lot more important on a team, where you can be out traded/out positioned by several bigs or jumped by lights. A lot of people can trade or brawl game mechanics-wise in bigs, but are missing out on situational awareness and understanding the flow of a game. A lot of lights can dogfight other lights well or dive on bigs, but can't keep track of the enemy movements for a whole match or identify a weak point and consistently apply pressure.
Most team games are a bunch of limited 1v1s anyway, with the caveats that you can't just freely relocate (most of the time) and that you are frequently trying to turn them into 2v1s.
This isn't to say 1v1 isn't skillful, since it can often be a better display of mechanical skill. It just downplays the awareness-based skill sets.
