Greetings Mechwarriors. Today I have a simple question. For the Battlemaster pilots among us, which engine do you prefer? A standard 340+ or an XL engine on your Battlemaster and why? So far, I've had some curiously decent games with a standard, but I've also been piloting assaults recently, so the speed wasn't much different.

All depends on the build, if you are making the 5 large pulse build you prolly want the XL, they are quite XL friendly.

The other build is the 3 large pulse and 4 meds on the 1g, I think and that works well with a standard, bit on the slow side but once you get into range it works like a boss.

I always prefer 375XL on the 1G and the 3S. Speed is life. 350XL for the 5xLPL 2C.

XL because despite its large side torsos it still takes a lot of CT damage, plus the speed is really handy for a laser boat.

I run my 3M with a STD 350. This is sufficient for 2xLPL, 6xML, and 20xDHS.

My 1S, the actual fun one with all the splat, runs an XL 390.

If you take an STD, then you'd prolly create a bigger beefier WHM-6D/GHR-5H/Black Knight.

STD 350 for me. For both the 6 mpl + 1 lpl and the 3 lpl + 4 ml builds i run in my phoenix 1G.

Edit: Actually, the build with 3 lpl and 4 ml runs with a STD 330.

I used to run the 1G as a "by the book" wubmaster, with the XL 400. Simply put it's a beast. But smart enemies will go for the STs, and after a few ST deaths i decided to try the STD aproach. It's a bit slower, a bit hotter, but it's worth the trade off if you play as a brawler.

Not to mention the nasty surprise when an enemy believes you have an XL and goes for your ST. Posted Image

I like to call the Battlemaster "The paradox" because of it's huge ST's that but only seems to take CT damage. lol

What I like to run BLR-1D

People can say "XL friendly" all they want but the idea of a XL in a assault...ewww.

I do prefer large XL engines. If you're too slow you'll get CT'd anyway.

Big XL. Easier to position, faster twisting, more guns. You don't die to ST destruction very often anyway. The STs are gift, but so is the CT.

There is no correct answer, both can be used. It depends on your loadout.

XL builds seem to be more fun. Live fast, die hot.

All my BLRs run XLs. My 1S is an LRM build so 300XL so I can fit quad LRM-10s with artemis and 10 tons of ammo. Three got the 350XL (1G, 1D and 1GHE), the 2C got a 380XL. I don't own the other two variants.

All of my BattleMasters run XLs. Mostly 400s. 375s in the 1D and 1GHE. My 1S LRM boat runs a 340XL, which is kinda small for a BLR XL, but it needs to keep up with the flow of battle or risk becoming irrelevant.

I run both, XL with 5LPL or STD with 4LPL. I've been going with the STD more recently because it seems everyone expects the BLR to run XL. Kinda funny when someone goes for broke trying to focus down my side torso, and it's like "Surprise!"
