Okay I'm still getting used to the match types here so apologies.
While I was being disconnected as normal I saw the match tips: "Destroying Alpha / Beta will 15 seconds to the enemy timer."
Okay...Alpha / Beta are large circles on the map. When you get there...how do you 'destroy' the map area? Is it a particular object?
Thanks!
Meanwhile I'm going to reconnect.

Destroy Alpha / Beta: How?

This is for Domination mode.
Alpha and Beta are objects on the ground, you even can target them. Waste time and energy ony when your team is on the verge of the clock running out, not before.

More specifically, they are communication and command trailers with a dish on the top - you can't miss them. They are there to allow you to give yourself more time in close matches, but are seldom used.

Very often in Frozen City one of the lances will drop near the enemy's Alpha and destroy it immediately. DO NOT DO THIS! As stated, destroying this will add 15 seconds back onto the enemy's timer, but only until the maximum of one minute. So, destroying one with more than 45 seconds on the enemy timer wastes a valuable help which may be needed later on in the match.

On a related note: dont bother.
Bumping the clock almost never comes into play.
Killing the enemy team should always be your first priority.
Dont be fooled, quick play is really just one game mode: skirmish.
No matter what game mode you are in you cannot escape this one piece of fundamental truth: dead mechs dont cap.

agreed killing Mechs makes it hard for the enemy to complete the objective, just do not fall into the trap of ignoring the objective yourselves. many times I have seen a team ignore the objective kill most or all of the enemy with minimal losses and still loose the match
if on domination you kill 11 Mechs by chasing them around the map while 1 Mech caps you loose.
if on conquest you kill all the enemy Mechs but the enemy has the all the caps and 500+ points while all you have left are legged assaults you will probably still loose, because you will not be able to uncap the points fast enough.
if on Assualt on HPG you only have slow Mechs and Lights cap you loose.
I never vote for skirmish, it almost never looses the vote so I am playing it half the time anyway and it ls my least favorate mode I prefer having the secondary objective.

I've never seen it needed or when it was, it was easier to simply get someone into the circle.

I have; it's rarely used, but it's good that it's in play. Just keep it in the back of your mind.
Do not, however, listen to people telling you "it's all just skirmish." (/glare) It's true that, in all of the game modes, the best tactic is simply to kill the enemy; but the resource-based game modes do alter the tactical environment. Dominion plays differently than Skirmish/Assault, as does Conquest. Conquest in particular: I've seen those capture points matter a lot, depending on the composition of teams and how the match plays out.
Like a lot of players, I do wish some of the game modes encouraged different play - but the new player help forums are not the venue to voice those concerns, particularly if it just comes down to salt.
