Seems like we should have a Gauss Charge Toggle, no? If Manual Gauss Charge is disabled, then it acts as a snap-fire weapon without the need for manual charging but is likely to explode if struck by critical fire.
If Manual Gauss Charge is enabled, then you need to do the click-and-hold mechanic to fire. An uncharged Gauss will not explode if critted, however the gun can still explode if it's hit while the user has it charged (by clicking and holding the trigger) during that brief window.
Leave the current cooldown change. How does this help the game?
Well, the current changes can roll-in as is, and then a future feature can be added to give us an option to make peoples' Mechs less likely to be destroyed by incoming fire, but also tax their firing capacity if they choose to enable gauss charge toggle. It's a TTK extension.
People who are in prime firing position would run with Manual Gauss Charge disabled and let their gun autocharge itself. They don't care about dying yet. People who are heavily damaged would enable Manual Gauss Charge so they don't get exploded as easily and are willing to accept extra durability in exchange for being able to snap fire.
Thoughts?

+1.
People will complain because it's a mechanic from tabletop,
But with both systems existing, one would hope it would be easy for PGI to implement. Then again, AC ammo switching is a no go, so I doubt they could code it without having copies of the Gauss co-existing.

An option... to manually charge your gauss rifle... why? What benefit do you get other than a .75 delay? Who would really use this other than a very small percentage of the already small playerbase?

Anyone with their armor in the red would probably want to engage Manual Charge mode so your Gauss Rifle is not a bomb waiting to explode...

You accepted the risk when you brought a Gauss Rifle or pair into the battlefield.
