I have a strange Problem: Closing MWO overheats my GPU.

It works pretty well while playing, but if the game crashes or I close the game in the "Garage"-view, my GPU-Usage often get's stuck at 100% and my GPU overheats until my PC crashes. Closing the game on the Map with Alt+F4 seems not to have this problem. I can recreate this error with both a Nvidia GTX 970, as well with an AMD RX 480.

Anybody got a clue what causes (or how to counter) this "Ghost Heat"?

EDIT: I'm using Windows 10 64 bit, 8 GB Ram, the game runs with DirectX 11.

I have a similar problem although I also get resets sometimes on the main menu screens.

E.g I just had the computer reset on me while building a mech in the mechlab.

I never seem to get rests while in game though and can play pretty much anything else fine. I'm not even in 1920x1080 resolution on mechwarrior but play most games at that resolution.

I'm assuming this is a graphics card overheat because googling this had other players complaining about the problem but all I really know is MWO causes my computer to reset and no other game does.

I have a radeon r9-380 series card.

Ghost heat is annoying enough on my mech, I don't want it on my graphics card.

Greetings all,

For the Nvidia cards:

Have you tried setting up a 'profile' for this game only?
- setting the heat vs fan speeds to ramp up.
(find it under Performance/device settings. May need to install the 'system tools' from Nvidia.)

And as always, get the latest drivers. With a clean install of the newer drivers.
- Some of the older Nvidia drivers had a problem with vid cards overheating, they corrected that problem with follow on drivers.
~ it started with 'ingame' graphics stuttering, as the card heated up, and just got worse.

On a side note; there have been 'issues' with the 970 cards.
~ (Causing a legal battle with some money refunded back for US purchases, due to overstated Ram capabilities not present.)

Now with both Nvidia and ATI delivering similar issues, that could be solely a game code issue! We all know there are still many code problems with this game. It's getting better, but still some players reporting, odd problems.
- For the 970, it should be able to run MWO maxed out with no issues.

If I remember correctly, there was a problem, some time ago, with the game leaving the 'mechbay' running in the background while the battle game was being run. But thought that have been corrected with a hot patch. (may not be related ..at all.)

Try the new driver clean install first. Set your 'Manage 3D settings' profile for MWO. And run the power management mode with 'prefer maximum performance'.
- With that check that the power plugs (both 8 and 6 pin) for the vid card are fully seated.

Good luck,

I used display driver uninstaller ( http://www.guru3d.co...r-download.html ) and reinstalled the NVIDIA card along with the driver. Seems to work for now. Thank you.

Greetings,

Good to hear.

The latest drivers for the 970 are:
  • Version: 372.54 WHQL
  • Release Date: 2016.8.15 (Mon. Aug 15 216)
  • Operating System: Windows 7 64-bit, Windows 8.1 64-bit, Windows 8 64-bit
  • Language: English (US)
  • File Size: 346.06 MB

From Nvidia; they specifically state that the non standard driver uninstall through the control panel 'programs' is NOT recommended. (and could cause leftover elements problems) Their included 'advanced/custom' (not standard) check box install, with the full clean install checked is designed to remove the last installed drivers. (This is if your system is configured normally)
- Now with the guru3d program, it is specifically designed to hunt down all the last driver installed locations and remove them. This normally works just fine, but may require a reboot and changing all your desktop back to default before the new drivers are installed. Normally not so much of a problem, just a pain to reset any 'unique settings' your system may have been configured for. (if it works for you.. great.)
~ I've personally never have issues with the Nvidia custom/clean install route.
(with a check to verify what was updated and what was not.)

On a side note here, check the Nvidia video settings.
- under adjust video colour settings
- select the advanced tab of the 3 shown.
- look to see if your video is defaulted to 16-234. (full grey to full grey change.)
- Update it with the Nvidia settings radial button and set the drop down to Full (0-255)
~ that's full white to black for sharper contrast and colours. And a darker/blacker default screen. (most manufactures will state there refresh rate as faster but not tell you they dropped off the full white and black settings!)

Later,
Aim True and Run Cool,
9erRed

I uninstalled all drivers first manually and then used DDU, just to be sure ;)

Thanks for all the additional Info, especially the "Full (0-255)" looks promising.
