I think your Definition of "Punk" RPG is a little wrong..
I like to play Cyberpunk, and i like Steampunk systems, and i have a hugh collection of Fantasy.
I played Traveler (Gurps) as Hardcore Scifi system.
Punk is the Definition that the Tech which is used is Freaky.
This means BT can't be Punk because everyone has Mech's.

Best Excample of Steam Punk is btw Wild wild west.
There is an Evil Overlord which uses some crazy Maschine other's can't match at any Level.

The Same goes for Shadowrun, even Lonestar can't Match a Runner Team on a 1:1 Basis they need Numbers about 5:1 to get it.
So it is the Punk against the System and the Punk is winning. Going back to Sky Captain and the World of tomorrow.. That is not Steampunk ! Because He is in the System. !
Iron Man 1&2 thats Technopunk !

To say it this way, the oldest Steampunk ever made is from Jule Verne. Twenty Thousand Leagues under the Sea.

It is not descipted how his Engine worked ( No Science fiction), he works out of the System and is a Outlaw.
And he uses some crazy Engines other's can't Match.

Not really into steampunk, but this game http://en.wikipedia...._Magick_Obscura was great!

Sky Captain just sucked, don't think Steampunk played a role in that.

Arcanum was and is an amazing game.

Omg 20K leagues, one series I still am looking for (I mean the original kind with the Nautalus in all it's glory) and I refuse to download them x.x But by your example, League of Extrodinary Gentlemen would be around this style (not the movie, that was a freaking abomination, I mean the really REALLY graphic novel)

Do you get angry often? Are you an angry person in general that is?

Are you asking me if I'm mad, bro?

Anyways, steampunk is cool. It is a huge genre with multiple subgenre's that two movies couldn't hope to cover in entirety. And since when does fun have to be smart? I would also like to mention that steampunk really predates most other sci fi genre's, from when people really thought steam was the way of the future, and when people like Tesla actually thought we would would use lightning guns in the near future.

No. The works of Jewles Vern are not steampunk. They were SciFi. They seem like steampunk now because they were written in the 1860's/70's.

Steampunk is what happens when people watch movies based on really old scifi, and think to themselves "hey, that looks cool!"

Steampunk really exists as more of a fashion point of view then as a fiction genre imo. Steampunk fiction is mostly like vampire fiction, overdone and usually horrible. Steampunk is more like the SCA. It's an alternate future timeline of the past. It's for people who want to dress up and act out a fantasy, but want something besides wizards and knights. I sell to a lot of these people, it's an interesting mix of SCA folks, Drama folks, and girls who love corsets...and if you can't enjoy a hot chick in a corset please recheck your position on puberty.

Odd I thought it had allot to do with Victirian style outfits, gears brass steam and leather, a open type of world setting, creative immagination, and a large variety of books that are just amazing, and some great games too.

Also, meh I love both the fashion and the games/settings though I don't think id dress in it (no where near the cash for all that >.>)

I realy mean the Original and i got them in my Book collection.
But to say it this way: Nemo is a Mad scientist, who wants to fight the System and invented a Superweapon in the Victorian Age ( to be frankly the Book was written in it) and Hunts the Navy of the World with his Steel Ship.

You didn't list a single thing I did NOT enjoy in your opening message. Especially Dr Who, which rates JUST below Battletech for me. Literally, next thing in line.

I loved Dr. Who..... but the problem is, everything after Sylvester Mccoy was complete ****. Low budget scifi can be charming, but low budget and bad acting? yuck.

Don't understand all the hate for Steampunk either. Sounds like the OP doesn't even know that genre of Sci-Fi well. Books like 'The Difference Engine' are the hallmark of Steampunk which was William Gibson of Cyberpunk fame. Instead of being near-future technology driven fiction it was usually a what-if the information revolution began with mechanical computers.

I like steampunk goggles. I would totally buy a pair and wear them along with some victorian style suit and ride around on a bike made out of brass pipes emitting steam from an exhaust pipe even though it doesn't have an engine...

Just my two cents here, Plus a few pictures. Good sir have you heard of the game Dystopian Wars, by spartan games. They have done Steam Punk very well and honestly i do feel like your argument has some creditably but not as much. But it's the different groups of the fans that i don't like. Some are nice, most are half rate. But then I'm afraid that the Sci-Fi fans are similar. (Don't much care for Robotech fans, or in more modern terms I really don't like Firefly fans.)

What is important is the Styles and the Universe them selves. I'm a Battletech fan first a foremost. Sci-fi is to broad a span to be a fan of. and Lastly I'd like to Leave you a picture of a Metzger attack robot, and a Ika Robot Squid, released by Spartan games a while back, For their "Steam Punk" game.

So, I'm not sure if someone already posted this because I was lazy and didn't read all the comments, but if anyone has read the Leviathan series it is one of the most steampunk things I've ever seen (not that i've seen a lot of steampunk) and it has mechs in it.

As a Cyberpunk, I have a hatred of steampunks myself. Not necessarily of the steampunk genre- there was at least one good book, The Difference Engine, about the very real scenario of computers being invented a hundred years early. It was written by William Gibson and Bruce Sterling, founding names of Cyberpunk.
Ten years later, attractive people with more brass spraypaint than sense started gluing watch gears to their Airgas blowtorch goggles and cobbling together hasty Victorian outfits, and wouldn't shut up about airships. Whereas cyberpunk was nearly killed off by becoming real life (ask me about that sometime), Steampunk had one chance, which was promptly ignored by these style-over-substance steamheads.

Am I the only one who read "I hate steampunk because it doesn't fit into what I think it should be"?
