If one reads these threads people who haven't been on the test server will assume that firing weapons with a combined power draw of under 30 results in no heat.
I haven't seen that.
I've tested exactly this, in a stock Jester. I'm just talking about IS lasers, which weren't fiddled with in 2.0, if I read the patch notes right and I could be wrong about that.
If I fire one LL and one ML together they do 14 damage. They together should draw 14 from the 30-point pool and thus draw no penalty. And I think that the key word is "penalty." In other words, more heat. Firing those two lasers does generate heat on the heat scale and if you just shoot them and nothing else, 14 points at a time, you will see heat spikes in the meter but you won't redline-at least, I didn't. Firing both LL and ML together will redline you after a bit, even though you're only drawing 28 power points. If you fire all six lasers, you put out 34 damage, drawing 34 power points and incurring a 4-point penalty...driving you into the redline much faster. It looks like a heat spike from firing more than three IS LL together on the live server when you override the 30 point cap. Which I believe to be why ED detractors are calling this Ghost Heat 2.0.
The difference is that the penalties in ED are more easily foreseeable (for me) on the run and I find heat penalties are more predictable. They're also distributed across all weapons rather than odd combinations of just a few, like LL or LRMs.
That's my view of it.
