Here is explonation.

http://mwo.gamepedia...ermeasure_(ECM)

So you need to use the counter mode only when enemy ECM mech is blocking you from it's rather close range.

It's mainly useful when you are stuck fighting enemy ECM mech alone and want to target and relay that info to your team, when you can't deal him easily or escape, so that your team could come help. If you have CAP/BAB you can target him from further away, but without counter mode your team won't still see him on radar when he comes closes, which in such situation either will do, or retreat.

Though you can see friendly mechs and that their communications are blocked if you pay attention to their markers, as they get a marker when they are being jammed. Most people won't but some light / mediums could notice it and come to help..

Sometimes it can be useful in brawling, usually with many vs. many situations, if there are friendly LRM boats that could support as well.

okay,

so by default, is it running or not? do I need to start by pressing 'J" first, or if I'm in the middle of the enemies group ?

I see what you're saying, but I'm having difficulty noticing if it's working for me or the team, I really don't want to guess, and by pressing 'J' is really just messing things up for the team

Your ECM has 2 modes.

Default mode - (Disrupt) - I'M SNEAKY mode

This is your normal ecm function that protects you from being targeted, and can be shared with allies nearby.

Alternate mode - (Counter) - NO STEALTH FOR ANYONE RAGE mode

This prevents ecm from working in your general vicinity, as described previously. For ruining the day of Pirates Banes and Arctic Cheetahs and so forth. You do not have your normal ecm protection in this mode (anyone includes you).

Pressing J toggles between the two modes. If you see an eyeball icon in blue on your right (and your weapons list says ecm - disrupt) you are in the Default Stealth mode. You should be starting in this mode too.

Just to clarify some of the above posts, if your ECM is in counter mode it turns off a single enemy ECM within range

If you have both ECM and Active Probe the active probes counter ECM function is deactivated.

And as you seem to have discovered only certain Mechs can carru ECM

Your ECM shows up in your item screen in the lower right of the screen as well. It shows the current state as well, and the default starting mode is DISRUPT. When you switch it over to COUNTER mode, you lose the protections it offers, but it will counter one enemy ECM in a short range.

It also doesn't need Line of sight for this, so the enemy could be on top of a building or behind a wall. This is also great for when there is one ECM light left and you are nearby. Make sure you toggle back to DISRUPT mode if you start getting missiles launched your way.

You're welcome and I'm sorry about that. There are a number of mechs with ECM Hardpoints (,too many hid it in their feet to keep it protected from torso shots or shoved it into an arm, making ecm',s low health counter meaningless.

----

Default hides you and allies up to 90 meters from sensors and at ranges of 90 or less can jam enemies that do not have BAP from being able to lock against anyone.
(Note if they have Streaks chances are they have BAP).
Great for ruining the day of LRMs boats.

"Counter" is used to remove an enemy ECM to make it easier for allies to deal with that threat.
A good group formation is two ECMs on disrupt plus one on counter OR a BAP user. Load up on Streaks too.

So. Much. Rage!!!

Best use of it is when a light with ECM is running around and you want and need missile support/and or other help.

Then just turn yours to "counter". A LOT of people do not seem to know about this.

Also you need to make sure that a mech capable of using ECM actually has the ECM module purchased and equipped. :)

Yes, I can't think of which one(s) don't come with it equipped, but ECM is listed in the hardpoints section of the mechstats window that pops up when you hover over the mech in the store. If you don't see it listed in the equipped items during sale, you'll have to purchase one, so factor that into your purchase cost if possible.
