If the game represented the Battletech Universe mechs like the Trebuchet and the Centurion would be valuable support mechs in a lance. Now they are just cannon fodder.

Past 3050, the 3025 Centurion and Trebuchet variants ARE cannon fodder.

Depending on how the Trebuchet turns out, of course.... but I'm considering making the Treb my main ride once I can. Here's what I plan on doing:

Treb 1: Missile Support with a secondary role of picketing against enemy harassers. This is basically the stock Treb with LRM15s and 3 medium lasers. It's swift enough to engage enemy lights, and has enough long range firepower to contribute to the fight from a safe distance.

Treb 2: Ambusher. Swap out LRMs for SRMs. Utilize the speed and jump-jet capability to gain an advantageous position, wait for the opportune moment, and make a mess of the enemy.

Treb 3: Hybrid. Keep one LRM, replace the other with SRMs. Less firesupport capability, but it will be much more useful than the stock version when things get close in.

I'm not too concerned about the low armor. When operating as part of a team, you don't need armor as much as when you're in a PUG and have to rely on yourself all the time. As a medium chassis with some speed I can maintain a good position most of the time, and allied heavies and assaults are there to maintain the battle line and take the hits. Mediums are for supporting the advance of the big guys, not taking and dishing the big hits.

re: Catapult and Treb similarities - honestly I think it cuts both ways. Sure you could ton-up and take a Cat, probably get more ammo and better heat efficiency, and certainly more armor. But then you're taking a heavy off the front line, and that's not necessarily a great idea. The Treb offers most of what the Catapult offers in a smaller package, while freeing up the heavier machines for line combat.
