what they need to do is this:

get rid of quirks and skills entirely. turn most quirks and skills into modules.

divide modules into categories (attack, defense, moblity, sensors, support, universal, etc...) and give each mech 8-12 module slots of varying categories based on whatever the mech's role is supposed to be. The amount and type of module slots each mech has would be completely different from mech to mech.

modules would have to go into a slot that matches their category. so like an attack module would have to go into an attack module slot. with the exception of universal module slots which could take modules of any category. but it would mostly be medium mechs that have universal slots since theyre supposed to be the most diverse weight class.

and obviously not all mechs are created equal. so worse mechs should get more module slots than better mechs to help balance them out.

and you would still have to pay gxp to unlock modules like you currently do. so the monetization aspect is still there.

Great discussion all. There are some really good ideas or expansions of what I was trying to convey with the upgrade path draft. I like the pilot and module ideas too, as alternatives to a more traditional tree like I made. Hopefully PGI has taken a moment to read and digest this a bit. I'm sure they are already in progress on the skill tree redesign if they plan to show it off at mechcon, but maybe this could give them some last minute ideas or refinements to their system.

Well, it didn't look the same, or work quite the same - but I was super encouraged by what I saw at Mechcon. The steps they are taking to increase diversity in builds and help define roles in MWO will give everyone a greater sense of ownership and will undoubtedly revitalize old or underutilized mechs.

Thank you PGI. You haven't let me down. I look forward to testing it in the PTS, and hope to see some of your creativity with new skills!
