I remember the last serious discussion about hitreg was with Karl Berg. He referenced that the netcode at the time didn't handle jitter very well.
It's still unclear to date if any work on the netcode has dealt with it... and frankly no patch since that mention referenced "improved netcode" in any semblance.
So... I don't see how the netcode is any better than it was before let alone the servers being any better (if not worse) than they were back then.
