A few weeks ago I posted trying to get mwo to run on a really old laptop since I don't have access to any thing decent. The laptop is a hp pavlion dv6 I got at a pawn shop for $100. System info says it has the following:

win 7 home sp 1
intel core i3 m350 2.27 ghz
ram 4 gig 3.80 useable
64 bit os

Downloading the stand alone client got as far as trying to install net 4.0 and just quit. After three hours of trying to download and install with multiple restarts it would always crap out at installing net 4. So I tried installing net 4 from Microsoft as well as other games such as Crysis 1, Red Alert 3 and Uprising, Mechwarrior 4 Mercs and GTA Vice City. All of those games worked just fine as far as installing and being playable.

Now I tried the steam client. That took only and hour and finally got past the net 4 hang up. I got loged into the game and started changing video settings. Unfortunately I changed the screen size to be where i can't get the settings option. So now i have to reinstall through steam later today.

I'm hoping after work I can get mwo working as far as mech lap and testing grounds. Besides setting all video settings to low and keeping it windowed mode what all can i do game wise to make those parts of the game playable? Pretty sure I won't be able to play any "live" matches against others until i get a new pc. how do I switch to 32 bit mode? Does the game even have a 32 bit mode? I know I can change direct x to 9 or 11 so I'm guessing go 9 there.

After work today I'll see what else I can do to make the game run mech lab and testing grounds.

No reason to run in 32bit mode. It's still a 64bit CPU, so you may as well run in x64.

Actually, it's possible that underpowered systems will just perform better with the 32bit client. This is true of my laptop as well:

Win 7 pro 64bit
i5 3360M (boost to 3.5GHz)
NVS 5400M (boost to only 800MHz)
8gb ram
DX11 (but runs better on DX9)

32bit workaround, see here:

Temp Workaround. (edited some)
  • Drill to your MWO folder/Bin32, right click on MWOClient.exe and select send to desktop as a shortcut.
  • Then right click on the shortcut, properties, Shortcut tab. Add to the end of the target line a space after the " then -nopatch and save.
Example of how mine is setup

Standalone
  • Target: "F:\Games\Piranha Games\MechWarrior Online\Bin32\MWOClient.exe" -nopatch
  • Start in: "F:\Games\Piranha Games\MechWarrior Online\Bin32"
****************

Steam Version
  • Target: "F:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common\MechWarrior Online\Bin32\MWOClient.exe" -nopatch
  • Start In: "F:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common\MechWarrior Online\Bin32"
Make sure to fully patch the game first.

PS. Make sure it is MWOCLIENT.exe in 32BIN folder, NOT the MechwarriorOnline.exe (patcher) nor MWOClient.exe in the 64Bin folder.
