Simple. It a fast attack mech with a diverse weapon set. You don't have one of those yet. The heavies are all either brawlers or support. The weapon diversity gives people something to really play with in the mechbay, and the speed of it gives a new facet to gameplay. So far, we've got brawlers, scouts, and long range support. Now you have quick response. Too unarmored to brawl, too slow to scout, and too weak to support. Fast enough for quick defense. Big enough to get noticed by enemy defenders.
Imagine: enemy scout got into your base, and nobody strong enough to take it down quickly is close by. Send in the Champion.
Imagine: the enemy has set up a s good defensive screen, and your heavies and assaults can't find a hole. Send in the Champion. He whips through, does a little damage, gets everyone's attention, and suddenly, there's a hole.
It's the fast attack heavy to all the other boomers.

The Champion (CHP-1N2 variant) is my favorite IS heavy weight mech. I really hope, we see it as a nice redesign in MWO.

With the various hardpoint layouts of the canon variants for the mechs already in the game, we've already got pretty much all of the niche bases covered.
There's no gameplay reason to add any more mechs. Might as well just start adding the ones that look the coolest.

Well, if we want variation, there's no 45, 55, 75, 90 or 95-tonners yet. While I don't imagine all these holes will be filled, off the top of my head I could easily see a role for jump-capable medium-range mediums like the Vindicator (or Enforcer) or heavy brawlers like the Orion or Flashman. Hell, if they want to emphasise command & control I could even see the Cyclops making it in, though the DC Atlas might fill mostly the same purpose. A King Crab would allow some pretty interesting possibilities for weapons loadouts.
My point is I can think of lots of mechs that would bring something new to the table, while the Champion, as far as I can tell, would essentially be a Dragon with a different model.

"Here is my updated Mech list
A lot of wishfull thinking in other's lists.
Really need to keep it: TRO3025, TRO3039, TRO3050(old and newer books).
You should not be picking Inner Sphere mechs that Are: Unseen / Quads / LAMS / Comstar / extinct Star League / Word of Blake / Clans / Wolf's Dragoon designs.
There are a lot of mechs out there to choose from still.
(Downgraded Star League mechs that still have production / parts factories existing in 3048 accoring to TRO3039)
=> Champion -2n
Lancelot 25-02
Flashman -7k
Thug -10e
Flea -4
Hornet -151
Thorn -S
Mongoose -67
Wyvern -6N"

Here's another selling point: look what FD has done with the other "eggs on legs". The Raven, Catapult & Stalker look like a cohesive set. Adding the Champion adds a faster brawler to that family.

Torso mounted Weapons
Arm hits are damage spoonge.
Incredible torso twisting giving the weapons huge arcs of fire while on the move or stationary
Cons:
Medium Speed
Mediocore Armor
