So I had a game on Viridian Bog a few moments ago where the map was in its night time stage and it was raining heavily. While admiring the awesome atmosphere of the map I couldn't help but wonder how much better it cound be with the inclusion of simple raindrops on the cockpit. Even the inclusion of snow and sand buildup in the corners of the cockpit glass would go a long way to improving atmospher and overall imersion. Obviously these effect would be toggleable. What would you guys think?

That +vision modes (NV, Thermal, MAD) displayed on cockpit glass, as stated "coming soon" by PGI back..."coming soon" ago

would be great inclusions towards game immersion. :D

I think I want the old glass back, first, and then we can add that in.

*PGI introduces cockpit glass weather effects*

Forums:
"I CAN'T SEE **** WITH THESE RAIN DROPS!"
"Wow this is terrible PGI. ggclose."
"Where's our toggle? These effects are in my way."
"aaaaaaaand disabled. Thanks for nothing PGI."
"can we disable weather effects?"
"so where's our windshield wipers?"
"thanks for ruining my FPS pgi"

It's neat, but any "immersion" is rejected violently and heavily criticized.

Almost everyone would toggle it off just like they do for normal cockpit glass, because it's buttugly and makes you have to squint the entire match.

Plus PGI would probably screw it up somehow and/or cause game crashing bugs

This ..cockpit glass that wasn't perfectly clear, and also that would crack(was to be added later) if your mech got damaged was put in place, the wailing and gnashing of teeth started on the first day, when it wasn't removed officially in under 24 hours some people illegally altered the FoV to 'remove' it and got banned.

Immersion must not get in the way of my l33t sniping skillz is the mantra here, which is why some maps are hated, because P.G.I put nasty trees in the way.

So just because PGI created a pretty mediocre glass effect and replaced it with one that was much worse, this means it's impossible to have a good glass effect that players will appreciate? I have to disagree.

Also, in addition to rain drops hitting the glass, let's not forget the 2012 requests to have cockpit glass with cracks and dents from bullets, explosives, etc.

We probably won't have it in this game though. All we have is that cool water-splashing effect when your mech emerges from the water with 0 density.

it's almost as if people often have different, conflicting opinions. Posted Image

I hate those remarks, like the one you responded to, because it's a strawman. Whom held those opinions that no longer do? I'm assuming their minds probably haven't changed and that this here is someone asking for something they always wanted.

That's the problem with forums, too many people argue in bad faith.

PGI's glass effects were garbage. The first one definitely caused an FPS hit, and considering that MWO is already poorly optimized and not very compatible with some gear, it was a real problem. It also looked like crud, with light often reflecting off the INSIDE of the glass, as if the sun was somehow inside the cockpit or as if all the mechs were open-topped. It was worse than not having glass at all, IMHO.

The "fixed" cockpit glass just turned everything various shades of green, which was even stupider and less realistic, since I guess in the future, non-heavily tinted glass is Lost-Tech?!

Decent cockpit glass would be nearly invisible, not wreck your FPS, not reflect light somehow off the inside of the cockpit, and not turn the world a murky color. Oh, and it would crack here and there when your head armor is breached. That's about it, and it shouldn't be too hard.

Meanwhile, for opposing hilarity, in World of Warships, they put rain and snow effects on the lens of the free-floating camera, which is cool, somewhat immersive, and somehow doesn't wreck the FPS. Ugh... PGI...

Yeah, cuz the game is built to much on "meta" and not enough on good gameplay, immersion and ability.

And this just makes me so, so sad... Mechwarrior used to be about immersion... I don't understand why there's soo many averse to such effects.

I mean, I hate Frozen City, but that's literally only because the map actively tanks my FPS by 20 or so... other than that, I'm fine with it.

I love the weather effects in this game, but god I wish Cockpit Glass had been done as was initially requested.

Cracks when hit with weaponry, weather effects distorting on it [ie raindrops, melting snow, ect.]

but no, they just gave us this lame, overlaid filter that doesn't do anything really...

it's just kinda, there.

I swear by my Archer, that I saw water splash effects on the cockpit, while on Viridian Bog. It lasted for few seconds, but it was there.

It's not water. It's some kind of dense, visable gas. The boat thought it was water too, and you see what happened to it. :D

More eye candy = lower fps.

Immersion does have a cost.

*PGI gives free stuff over the weekend*

"WOW, you even managed to screw this up - I can't even get everything!"
"Oh gee, thanks for the flamer PGI..."
"Can we please have an extension? I worked this weekend, and my girlfriend keeps calling me, and I just felt like doing other things, my boss called and I-, I had family over and-, the matches take too long and-."
"this isn't fair! I'm not getting MORE free things on top of my free things!"

*PGI introduces loyalty rewards*

"WHY CAN'T YOU JUST GIVE IT TO US FOR FREE?"
"WHAT'S LOYALTY MEAN, ANYWAY?"
"I'VE BEEN PLAYING MWO FOR 109 YEARS, I DESERVE EVERYTHING FOREVER.... EVEN THOUGH I ONLY BOUGHT A $30 PACK OF MC..."

I'm painting everyone with the same brush, because even you Revis, I'm sure, have complained about something simply because it's not something you particularly wanted, the timing was wrong, or a slight human mistake was made.

The problem is that this forum in particular likes to take those tiny grains of sand and treat them like a burning piece of magnesium on their skin.
