Light KMDs might be tough. What would be the most optimal Mech to get Light KMDs with?

something with srm's or lrms probably. A huggin with LRM5 or 10s and a range module could hit stuff out to 1300 meters.

I'm guessing that newbs can use the trial mechs and qualify for the awards, in weights they don't own ?

You'd better count yourself back in. It isn't "Do a KMDD on Mech of <weight> class", which would have promoted use of LRM Heavy/Assault Mechs. It happens to be "Pilot a Mech of <weight> class and get a KMDD on some other Mech", which can (and probably will) require using builds WITHOUT the presence of LRMs. So, don't just throw in the freaking towel. Instead, grab yourself some AMS, ECM, and/or 'Radar Deprivation', and be ready to give others a disturbingly bad day.

Oh, this doesn't look bad! Just a KMDD with each type of mech everyday for the next 18 days.

And it uses my idea of making a kill WITH the mech type instead of ON the mech type! So you have control now-thank you PGI!

It'd be nice if there were some grand reward (maybe a mech or similar) for completing all 85 challenges. Otherwise there is no need to go for all challenges . Still its a great event

For max C-bills you'll want to do all 5 challenges every day for 17 days. That will get you 8,075,000 C-bills if my math is correct.
