In fact, I think there should be IS and Clan versions.
It would be canon both ways.
During the last succession war (as revealed by several novelettes), several IMPs were STILL in use by the 'pirate bands' in the borders around the Inner Sphere.
These mechs were in notably better condition than most 'pirate' mechs of the time due to the 'ease of maintenance' inherent in the original design.
This was BEFORE the clans showed up and brought 'updated' mechs (which included 'omni' versions of the IMP).
When the Grey Death Legion (a mercenary team) collected a computer core from an abandoned Star League base on Helm; there were several dozen assault mechs in the facility.
Greyson Death Carlyle (the merc leader) noted many IMP mechs in the mix, so the Star League (and thus Com Star) had them.
Both the clans and Com Star deployed IMP mechs in the final battle of the first clan war.
This was noted by mech pilots of BOTH sides and many 'others' who weren't supposed to be present.

also pgi doesn't make mechpacks anymore.
if they were to do mechpacks for some reason, they are going to be iconic mechs that bring something new to the table, otherwise they wont sell enough to turn any profit.

that checks some boxes. there are iconic is omnis, and omnis provide a source of novelty. they would sell.
i think they should have moved from a monthly pack to quarterly is and clan mech packs, rather than cold turkey no more packs. maybe the rifleman iic didn't sell, and that was a mech a lot of players were asking for.

The first and only time I suggested the Imp (for lols, granted) it got allot of hate for some reason.
That said, we are more likely to see the Imp before any other mech as it would also fit the MW5 time line along with the Annihilator and Marauder II. I'm sure any mech they drop in MW5 would also pop up in MWO.
So if MW5 does well enough to get some DLC love... maybe?

if the game persists past the release of mw5 that is. i can see some kind of split dlc/mechpack arrangement. buy the dlc and get the mech pack free (though they would probibly try to sell the pack to the anti-epic refund crowd). though i have a hunch that the first iteration of dlc will just be a bunch of clan mechs that we already have in mwo.
