CLASS!!! :P

OK I want to know four things ... what is your favorite mech class? And why? Then I also want to know what is your worst/dread mech class? And why?

Maybe by getting a lot of people who have differing opinions each other can gain knowledge from the other to help better their game play.

I will go first of course:

I love the Heavy mech class. The reason why is I feel it gives me the best weapon load out and right amount of armor without just sacrificing speed. My favorite examples of this are the Cataphracts, Warhammer, and Marauder. You get loads of weapons to bring that are BIG weapons like the AC20, AC10, ERPPC, and Large Lasers; and in many cases you get to bring more than one of them. You also get the armor to tank awhile so torso twisting helps you survive that entire melee of a good brawl. Lastly you are usually not the slowest on the team like the assaults which can get left behind by overly aggressive teams.

The mech class I have the most issues with is the light, and it has to do more with the lack of weapons. They have great speed which usually keeps them from getting focused because they can run away, but you still run into one click and then your done. Now the main reason why I hate this class is because you never have the weapons it seems to just unload like in a BOOM and ZOOM. It is more like a Chew and Zoom ... run up drop small pulses and run away. Come back again Chew some more with another dumping of small pulses and run away. The only thing I have found that works for me is finding that one mech by it self and then just stay behind it to core it out, because if you get out in front of it then usually you get whacked.

Most mediums tend to "look" the best IMO but functionally, heavies by miles!

I hate non-sniping lights and big slow lumbering assaults.

Like 90% of the playerbase, I like heavy mechs. Catapults and Jagers are nostalgic favorites, and I have fun playing in both of them. Fast enough to get around, heavy enough to lay the hurt down.

The one I hate most is lights. I don't have a steady enough hand or sharp enough eye to fight going as fast as you have to to make lights worth it.

Man, that's a tough one. For me it is about the kind of mood I am in, how bad the shakes are atm, and how much alcohol is on deck atm. Depending on those factors I might be all about running a ballistic Panther, a sniping Grid Iron, a srm spaming Catapault, a dakka Mauler and/or everything in between. That said, I run fast heavies probably the most, probably because that is what we used to run when CW didn't suck and I want to hold on to that sort of feel.

Favorite: Lights. Gives me more freedom to roam around the maps and do my own thing. Mediums would be a close second.

Least favorite: Pretty Baby. I like all weight classes, i just dislike certain mechs.

All weight classes are mine.
The worst class.
All except lights -- when it comes to jumpjets.

Pretty Baby was pretty Awesome back when it had 400% torso twist and slower than dogshit stopping power. Think about it, when climbing hills your 'braking' is significantly slower. This means even braking caused by climbing hills is slowed down.
Pretty Baby could climb slopes that even lights couldn't.

But then they did "Quirks" for all the mechs and removed the "negative" quirks... completely ******* over the Pretty Baby's vertical mobility advantage.
The only mech that could still climb many of the pillars on Tourmaline Desert may as well have had its legs chopped off that day.

My favorite class is Heavy. When I started playing Battletech a long time ago, the heavies were the ones I was drawn to the most. A lot of that was aesthetics, I loved the classic 3025 designs, but they were also the most fun for me to put on the table. It was the return of the Unseen mechs that got me into MWO in the first place so those are what I gravitated to. Warhammers, Archers and Riflemen were the first mechs I bought, and I've just recently added Marauders and Thunderbolts to my collection.

My least favorite class Is Light. A lot of that goes back to tabletop as well, I didn't enjoy playing them but they had their place. In MWO I don't like the way lights are implemented, nor do I have the skillset to get much performance out of them. The brief time I spent in a light was miserable, by far the worst time I've had in this game, so now I stick to the other classes and leave the lights to better pilots.

I really like all the classes, so I'll go by which class I play most naturally.

Natural Class:
Assault: I'm perfectly fine being slow and lumbering. Tactical positioning plays a big part and my mind can deal with that. I know to never, EVER only have short range weapons if you're a slower assault (i.e. slower than 60 kph) as you won't be getting in range on some maps. Knowing the right time to turn a corner and rip into things is an art that assault pilots need to know to not be shred in an instant. Played right, they annihilate what's before them.

Least Natural:
Lights: I'll just say I love the JN7-IIC A with 6 er mediums. If you can get in behind the enemy you'll sometimes find a mech waiting for late game cleanup... and proceed to obliterate either a side torso or their entire mech. (RIP locust.. Never had a chance, I could have cut through 3 of you with that alpha)

But I have many issues getting my light to survive like other people (maybe because I don't play ACH's) or get large damage numbers even when I feel like I've been constantly firing the whole match and have gotten multuple kills. Lights are low c-bill producers for me, even though the JN7-IIC A is so fun and my Std engine wolfhound is a blast (the thing just doesn't die, people will rip it in half and start walking away only to get shot again)

Assault. Ever since I got my Founder's Atlas, I have been in tune with the Assault class. Some people think Assault mechs severely lack in mobility. I say:

I used to love the lights years ago, but found myself outgrowing them and felt like I needed to more shooty things. Though I can't say for sure what weight class is my favorite, but anything that is fast enough, zombie, has a SYMMETRICAL hardpoint layout and a good brawler/damage dealer is my way to go.

Heavies. They are the best mix of maneuverability, firepower, and durability. In the Venn diagram of those three items, Heavies have the most area overlap.

After that - Assault, Medium, then Light.

Because of my history with Tabletop and MW Clix I love assaults so I have a lot of them. I love the DireWolf so it is my first choice all the time. I really like the King Crab so i have been using it a lot lately. But I own 20 Mech's and 14 are assaults. That will change with the next per-orders that come out but give me big firepower any day. Even if Im not the most skilled.

Worst: Lights. has everything to do with my skill as a pilot. I just cant run that fast and shoot and stay on target. Plus I'm more of a duel guy than run and shoot. I have run the trials several times and just cant get the hang of them.

I'm a medium jock all the way. The do-it-all workhorse ethos just speaks to me. Both in MWO and TT actually.

I like some heavier, versatile 'mechs like the Crusader and the BattleMaster. Also some 35 tonners like the Raven and the Panther, but they're really "light mediums" (with stock TT engines anyway).

Love lights and fast mediums. Heavys are the best mechs but since that Q is always over full of learned to love speed.

Tried Assaults but I detest the lack of mobility. The only one that comes close to my mobility needs is the Victor. Even after mastering it earlier this year I find it quite bad. It's fun and has potential but it has not received the love other IS mechs have been blessed with. Quite frankly most heavys are more durable, faster and better armed with better mount locations.

I find that if you are a good shot and have decent situation awareness a fast unit is great. Lights take a lot of work and attention. Most opposing pilots don't lead their shots so they think lights are tougher than they actually are.

You do need to learn what works for you though. I find 160kph is my max effective speed I am accurate at. Past that I frequently have to stop and shoot. That is not a healthy practice for lights.

Also many lights are in a bad place and the weight class has few viable options right now.

I love my Spirit Bear, it is part of my soul.

Mediums and especially Lights just don't mesh well with me. Though I am very much looking forward to the Huntsman and hope for a new Clan light to learn to love in the near future.
