Dumb as it might sound found using old DDR mat to turn mech and control speed not bad, and even seems to add to the feel of piloting something big.

Does anyone else have any odd ideas for controllers?

Scream-based throttle. The louder you scream, the faster you go. Turning is controlled by the pitch, so low-frequency screams (such as a death-metal grumble) turn left, high-frequency screams (hair-metal or otherwise) would turn right. Turning in a circle while moving forward would require some sort of "air raid siren," as they call it, that is as loud as possible.

Keyboard and mouse is what I use. I do have a microsoft pro I might try since it has rudder option for torso.

mouse and Joystick are my default go to controllers for Mechwarrior games.. I did pick up an N52 speedpad for pvp in "The Secret World" so I might try that and see how it work out. probably won't need all the buttons on it though.

Oh man, the reel could be a great throttle-up, or even torso-turn control

Sneeze would either be an alpha strike or self destruct.

This. Also need to use use windmill headbanging as a means of twisting your mechs torso. Depending on which way you spin your head will determine the way the torso goes.
