So, I've been busy for the last year and a half. Haven't started the game and thought I might have a look again. Thus begins my tale of woe.

Of course, the patcher didn't work, which I was kind of expecting given all the updates I'm behind on, so I ran the repair tool. Downloads a ton of files and says I'm A-OK.

But I run the patcher, and nothing happens. I get the BootstrapSentinel popping up in my task manager, but then dies, then starts, then dies, etc. Nothing in the bootstrap-patcher log. So I kill the process.

OK, go fresh. Download the client, run it. It goes to uninstall the game, but dies partway through. Log shows no errors. Doesn't look like any files actually removed.

OK, move the MWO folder and try the install again. Still fails.

OK, try the uninstaller on the system and it succeeds, I assume removing any required registry settings.

OK, start the installer. It says it's going to install, and about 1 second later says it's done. No files. No shortcuts. Nothing. The Launch button on the installer obviously does nothing.

I believe "WTF?" would be appropriate now.

I thought about trying the Steam installer, but I'd rather not use Steam for MWO. Any thoughts on how to get the game to actually install?

Oh yeah, I tried running everything as Administrator as well. Same results.

Get something that cleans obsolete / broken registry entries ... you can try CClearner which is what I use for mundane registry up-keeping. Not great but it does most of what I need.

Then try doing a fresh install.

Even if you don't want to KEEP using steam, you could try to install via Steam to see if it works, then uninstall via Steam to ensure its fully and cleanly uninstalled, then try again from scratch with the regular (freshly downloaded) installer.

I just got a new laptop and thought I'd try to install through Steam this time cause I'd read the install process is far smoother and faster.

And it is!!

No problems at all. Installed quicker than a regular patch did on my previous stand alone install. Tonight I'll see how it does with a (big) patch. Expecting a smooth ride really.

I tried CCleaner and it didn't help. I've got the uninstall about as clean as it's gonna get, but still nothing.

I guess I'll try Steam later and see how it goes.

With Steam, it also downloads and install necessary Microsoft programs, from DX9c (June 2010), C++ 2010 32/64bit and .Net4

There's that too, I liked that feature as well. And just as a follow-up, Tuesday's patch installed fast and fine through Steam. Not going back to the separate client I think.

So, I went with the Steam client and it's been fine. I'll stick with that. :)

*edit Bah caught by the necro!

heh, i was just about to post and say.. go for it.. steam works quite well. I was a big anti steam person for a very long time. My thinking was i'd rather have hard copies, and actually own them you know. I liked not having an internet connection to play and such. Then they added play off line at some point and it got me to reconsider. I think i made my account back around 201 and reluctantly went over to the dark side. It was a bit after i joined GoG for all those outta print games i loved and i got used to the digital installs.

anyways.. Steam works very well with this game, and the auto-updates are super easy.. For me, i just turn off launch steam on boot, then i just log in when i wanna play this or something else. I don't need 5 game shells running at once, between all the online game dl systems.

So welcome to the dark side... Just try not to get to sucked in by sales.. Though better yet, put games you want on your wish list and wait for one! Posted Image

I've also been avoiding steam. Had an issue a while back that made me have to run the repair tool every time I wanted to play. Also if I exited the program and wanted to relaunch, repair tool. No errors found, just cleaned the shaders and whatever else it does automatically. The patcher always worked but it never launched from there. It would be a process, but doing nothing.

Uninstalled and reinstalled. It takes a bit long to launch from the patcher, but it does work without repairing now.
