For a light 'mech...a custom Locust with MASC and Super Charger. That should send 'em packing as I run so fast I go create a wormhole and find myself in the 20th century.

Of them all, I see the mediums working in pairs or threes, mech-hunting.
lights I see on their own, recon and force direction/information and electronic warfare.
heavies bring the pain, normally in support and power roles, mech hunting mano-a-mano.
Assults are command and center line mechs, they are the heavy hitters that bring the big smack down.

So i figure, while everyone is looking for these guys to disrupt tactical lines and strategy, two mediums and running about out manoeuvring and harassing the big guys and gunning down the wee ones.

i do belive thats how it should be done.

With the added armor and weaponry not to mention jumpjets and respectable speed these may be the fast/hard hitters in the matches that excel at flanking maneuvers or used as fast reinforcements to an area of the map that is being overwhelmed.

Any thoughts or improvements on that idea?

I think you've hit the nail on the head there!! Sounds like you're referring to a 'light' class of mediums (hence increased speeds toget to map areas that are being overwhlemed?) That's my take anyway.

I'm in favour of splitting 'Mediums' into light and heavy versions for tactical gameplay reasons.

I can imagine the above scenario happening Arden, good observation there.

This is an idea I agree with, using mediums to shore up defenses/attacks where needed. Fast response units.

One thing about pre-clan mechs is that they tend to be much more focused. Compare the Dragon and Atlas (since they're confirmed) to the Timber Wolf. The Dragon is as fast as the Timber Wolf but it's armor is much weaker (if still serviceable) and it's significantly under gunned. The Atlas is tougher than the Timber Wolf, but it's again under-gunned and much slower.

You won't be getting your pocket heavies, but you also won't be fighting cavalry heavies. If there's any kind of scenario system at all then lights and mediums should be perfectly serviceable.

Medium mechs are also cheaper then most heavy or assault systems.

Also if Mechs aren't weighted 1 vs.1 by numbers, but with firepower/tonnage/BV/whatever as a modifier, your team could pay for having 4 assualt MEchs with running one lance short compared to your opponent. And yes, ofc, balancing will be a major PITA, but we know that already, always was a touchy issue with BT, even in pre computer game times.

Now, considering that at first we might get a limited supply of stock Mech types, it could turn out each faction/house gets only to choose between 2 or 3 assault models at start. Depending on which those are, some people might actually not want to play them due to being outnumbered thanks to the balancing factor every other battle. What also often worked as a balncing factor in the TT, was the slug-like speed of IS assaults. If bloody tanks can run circles around you or elementals keep upwith you, thus you not being able to get rid of them, the assault pilot was sort of prone to calling for "lighter" help. :P

Also add to this the eventually forbidding price tag/repair bill on Assault Mechs, and they might be naturally a limited occurence in battles. Especially if people have to make the call later on whether to get an assault or some juicy LosTech'/ClanTech items instead.
