The supernova was always going to be mediocre at best for one very simple reason: Energy boats are not really viable without massive engines, because they need to be able to move about decently well to make up for their inability to sustain fire (and the extra heatsink slots, buts that a bigger deal for IS than Clan). Low engine cap high tonnage energy boat = bad.

The SNV-C might be a very good mech, IF the side torso energy mounts are placed up next to the cockpit, considering the incredible cockpit location and what will likely be a good front profile for damage spreading, it could make a pretty (very?) nice quad ERPPC hover sniper with like 28-30 DHS.
However, i think its much more likely that the energy points will be low down on the 'wings' at the front of the torso, and in that case its simply DOA when considering the MAD-IIC will come first and be better in every way barring cockpit location (higher engine cap, 1 ton JJs, etc), and a good cockpit location isnt much/any benefit unless there are weapon mounts up there too.

How can we even pretend these will be anywhere close to balanced???

The way we pretended it with every other "obsolete on release" mech aswell?
