I don't find that duration makes something less stupid. Just look at religion.
Taking that statement out of the equation - why do you think lights with large lasers and assault mechs with jump jets are a bad thing? A large laser weighs 5 tons.. put it on a 'Mech that has the tonnage available? It makes fine sense to me.
Assaults having jump jets - those jump jets are much larger than the ones on lights/mediums, and weigh more to showcase that. Why not add maneuverability to something otherwise fairly clunky and slow? It makes sense from a tactical standpoint.
If you're thinking "Lights should all be fast, have small lasers, SRM2s, and machine guns, while assaults have big weapons and they're slow, clunky, and easy targets!", then this probably isn't the game for you.

Lights with large lasers? There's one in the very first Battletech technical readout, TRO3025- the original Jenner packed one. Heck, the Panther had a PPC.
Ditto assault 'Mechs with jump jets. The Victor, again TRO 3025. TRO 2750 had the Hussar (hello, first ER LL harasser!) and the Highlander, of "Highlander Burial" fame. And the Crockett for that matter in the "jumping assaults" category.
If you're gonna talk about "stupid", try doing it about things that don't exist. Say, like ghost heat?

And did you notice - they are using giant stompy robots instead of flat, concealable tanks. Who comes up with something like that?

Well that and we are living in some post apocalyptic universe where we have faster than light travel and fusion engines, but we cant create missiles that fly farther than 1 kilometer.

All jets should produce heat, the larger the jet the more the heat ... this would also nail sky dancing ppc assault mechs and limit them as you describe to being 'manoeuvrability' items only.
