The trial clan hunchback with two uAC10s can be devastating and it draws a lot less attention than heavier mechs so I would suggest grinding with that mech to get the cbills needed for a TBR. Or you could get a Kodiak For real money. The KDK hits harder than the HBK IIC, but if you aren't careful everyone on the red team will (or at least should if they aren't potatoes) target your KDK above all other threats.

Actually, to be honest, once you decide you are willing to spend real money, I would step back and take a look at what you really want. Instead of a Hero Timber, you could spend 20$ and buy 3 Kodiaks (Kodiak-3 is the best mech in the game right now). You could also buy 3 Night Gyrs, which are very good heavies, like a Timber but trades mobility for significant firepower. I would actually say that those two might be your best deal right now, because you get mech bays for them as well, and some premium time (30 days worth) which will help you earn more c-bills.

These are both great mechs and will help you get your C-bills for your Timber Wolves. The Kodiak-3 with 2 UAC10s and 2 UAC5s should print C-Bills for you.

Also you can sell 1 engine and some of the equipment to get some more cbills. THe marauder with the add on is good because you also an extra 300xl. The $20 dollar packs with premium time a really a good deal for new players.

The smart thing to do is research the available builds and get the good ones mastered/elited and life gets a ton better. Next buy modules - I know stinks for new players, but they help (radar dep and seismic)

I highly suggest the "Sparky" which is in the Griffin mech line if you have real money to spend. It's a hero mech with a 30% cbill bonus. It has good weapon hardpoint locations, can spread damage good and is a good all arounder for most your needs. Also I wouldn't recommend running XL engines if you're new since a single loss of a side torso for Inner sphere mechs will result in instant death equipped with an XL. Timbers are solid mechs but most the builds people tend to recommend for it are usually tryhard meta builds. The hunchback is a good medium starter mech, though mind the large right torso. The Crab is really hardy and a good skirmisher. The Shadow hawk is pretty good at a range of thing. For clan mechs the stormcrow can suit any need you want it to. Thunderbolt is a very good hardy heavy. The Cataphract is also a hardy heavy. I'm listing IS mechs mostly because they're cheaper and can preform just as or better than clans if used right.

Yeah Sparky is a very nice hero mech for a noob, however what sucks about it is that all the other Griffin variants suck and you have to buy and run two more of them to master the Sparky.

what I want to know is, are there any atlas-d configurations better than the trial highlander? what a waste of my cadet bonus.

Oh you did not.

I'm a terribad player but even I do well in Griffins. 2N is the go to for scouting or brawling in general. It is a joy to play even in a loss. Fast, hard hitting and fairly tough. Its 3M brother is even better if you can do the alpha, twist tango and shield with your side. The 1N and the 1S are not as good certainly but still plenty playable and at low tiers if you find Brawling with them to tough, try switching the SRMs to LRM 5s or 10s. In any case if ya need three the 2N and the 3M are the way to go (along with Sparky). But even the Mastery Bundle which gives the 1S with Sparky and a 2N is not a terrible burden.

So with all do respect, the Griffin variants range from OK to outstanding, but in no way can it be said that they "suck".

Yikes man. That is a tough road to hoe. I think I gave up on the meta brawl build (std 350ish, AC20, 4MPL, 2ASRM6 I think) because I always seemed to die before I got into range. I think I did a Misery build to level mine 3LPLs and an AC20 ( I could be thinking of my Boar's Head...I honestly don't recal). At least the LPLs give a bit of range and it runs fairly cool...I may have even dropped the AC20 to a 10 and upped the engine some. But yeah, the D is a tough one to play.

Go with either medium or heavy. If you plan being a lot more mobile, go with medium, but firepower with heavy. Lights and Assaults are too extreme and situational.

I suggest with a HBK-IIC-A or HBK-IIC-C for mediums, TBR-A for Heavy. Or you can just try what you like with Trial Mechs, see what clicks.
