I recently came back to MWO after a long break and, for the most part, I'm having fun piloting all the mechs again.
'For the most part' because in most of my matches people seem to have no common sense and a total lack of situational awareness.
Just to give a few examples:
- ECM mechs running away from LRMs instead of providing ECM cover for teammates
- ignoring UAVs
- ignoring flanking mechs, backstabbers and spotters
- bad positioning (no cover, low ground, splitting up,...)
- no balls/no initiative -> frontline/pusher mechs hiding till it's too late
- no coverfire, fireline or crossfire
- lemming mentality
Of course this is solo queue and I know I shouldn't expect much, but there are also matches where people really work together. The only question is, why doesn't this happen more often?
How do you get people to play as a team? Not a perfect team, but good enough to help teammates, push together, tank some hits, shoot the same target,...
Any ideas or tips are welcome.

In solo queue people play like they do in solo queue. If you want people to play as a team, get a group together on teamspeak and drop groups. It can be pretty tricky to make people work as a team even in group queue.

If you're not tier 1 already, grind your way up to tier 1. Not always, but quite often, especially in European and American prime times, players tend to work together enough to fit your criteria.
Other than that, providing/agreeing on some sort of a plan at the start of the battle often gets people to work together, especially if you use VoIP.

In my experience, almost every time somebody proposes a plan on VoIP, the team follows it with enthusiasm. It just takes someone to be brave enough to do it.

Lately, I've seen people follow plans into complete blunders, but at least, they followed.
All it takes is a commanding voice on VOIP, and another that agrees with him (it takes two)
If there's no agreeing voice, that means "VOIP command not valid, overruled.
But if there's a voice saying "taking Theta, roger" or the command wheel's "Affirmative", people understand, and suddenly.. magically..
listen.
Well, sure, there are always those that don't, but most do. And that's a step in the right direction.
And it also helps if the commander has charisma and roleplays a little.Just ask Kendricks ;-)
P.S.
It just occurred to me that this is actually a fun social experiment. As long as someone issues commands, and someone agrees to them, most agree to them. If someone issues commands, and one shows defiance, all show defiance.

When I was getting those 15 loot bags today I noticed that there's emerging new "meta" on how teams play the match. Quite a many match was lost simply because people refused to engage enemy. Honestly I haven't really seen it much in MWO till lately as it's more of a world of tanks thing. It's especially bad in canyon as most of the team just goes to huddle in some hole waiting to get surrounded.
I don't mind that people do mistakes and die stupidly at start of the match as I do it myself often enough. But behaviour that I see as a nonparticipation while hiding and waiting for few guys to bring you victory really rustles my jimmies.
Someone yelling at voip usually helps teams to be more active, but it doesn't always help as potatoes don't have ears and prefer to just bury themselves underground.

VOIP is vital for coordination. Failing that, liberally use the command wheel. If there is one thing that gives me more satisfaction that a match won, it is when my teammates thank me for calling the drop. It is an awesome feeling.

Hey Bunny, long time no see
That's true, but at least the chance is higher in group queue.

If the first sheep does something smart and the next one follows, chances are high the rest of the team will do the same.
If the first sheep does something stupid rest will follow aswell.
I like to walk clockwise if iam the fastest player out, just too see if the team will follow instead of normal nascaring. Makes the games alot better if they do imo
