An Old "new Player" Comes Back To The Game...

I probably put a few weeks of solid gametime in back then but for some reason stopped playing and totally forgot about the game until last week.
The game is a lot more fun now than I remember (12v12 for a start is a slug fest love it compared to the old 6v6) I wasnt then and am not now that great a player at all. I just got "promoted" from scrub tier 5 to lesser noob tier 4.
I have one point of contention to make though. Back then I used a lot of light mechs and medium mechs as I really didnt like the heavy slow bulkiness of the bigger mechs and prefered the fast "pick your attacks" sort of gameplay with light mechs. (Also severely lacked experience)
Now im back in the game, I tried to do the same thing with ligher mechs and seemed to fail over and over. I then tried the Highlander trial Assault mech and WOW amazing! Tanky (quirks!?) and those clan AC`s are very nice! After about 8 - 10 battles using the Highlander trial I am doing much better and hence got my promotion to tier 4. I went a bought the kodiac line the other day as it was similar, reccomended and with even more Dakka.
TLDR - As a noob I feel a lot more confident and useful in battle using Assault mechs. What incentives are there now to use light and medium mechs (especially medium mechs)? What sort of loadouts should I be looking at as im sure that I have a lot to learn.
Apologies for the wall of text.

But yeah, KDK-3 is where it is at, ultimately.

Is mechs have gotten the perennial shaft.
And if you do go IS avoid the ultra's on any mech.
Save yourself some heartburn.

There have seriously been times in tier 2 when an enemy falls like a wave over the crest of a hill, flows down AROUND me attacking my teammates... and I sit there shooting them in their back and none of them tend to notice me.
Mediums require you to play with your team, since if you're caught alone you're very likely dead... and as long as you're with your team, slipping away when you're noticed and quickly repositioning somewhere new, you tend to be one of the last targets which means you can spit out a serious amount of firepower. With the Hunchback IICs I am not infrequently the highest damage player on the team.

I beg to differ. UAC5s are the only viable IS ballistic in my opinion. AC5s are useless. The AC10 only works on heavily quirked mechs and the AC20 is too hot and slow to be worth it's weight and size. AC2? Only if you can mount 4 or more or heavily quirked.
The LBx10 has gained a little more umph as they have reduced the pellet spread this year and upped the crit chance.

Hello there! Welcome back to the fold. And currently, light mechs are definitely not user friendly for newer players, because they (generally) underquirked and oversized. I would definitely recommend running heavy/assault mechs for a bit to get used to the game again. Another reason light/medium mechs don't do so hot as they used to is because of the switch to 12 vs 12. The more guns there are, the faster you're going to go down when you're noticed. And ignore the people spouting that Clan mechs are overpowered, there are a few of them that have been ignored by the nerf hammer for no good reason, but generally the game is the most balanced it has been in a LONG time. If you have any questions, just put 'em out there and I'm sure the community will help you.
(Oh, almost forgot. If you want to go with the best of the best for light mechs, the Locust, Arctic Cheetah, and Jenner IIC are the tops. For mediums, the Hunchbacks (both IS and Clan) are really good still.)

Lights and to a lesser extent mediums both took a hit to durability with the Mech size re-scale that occurred in the June patch:

For the most part they all got bigger which makes them easier to hit and damage them. There really isn't any game based incentives to run them, outside of occasional events that reward using specific mechs/weight classes. The one advantage for them is they typically have the shortest queue time so you'll typically get matches faster.
Dakka and PPC's are pretty popular on heavies/assaults now, with the KDK-3 being the Assault of Choice meta currently.

BY the way tiers are not tied to skill. It is just an XP bar.
