Four changes that would accomplish the title's statement for MWO:
1. Increase the number of crit slots lost needed to destroy an engine, from 3, to 4.
2. Make causing a critical on an engine just take away a crit slot, instead of totalling the engine
3. Debuff mech heat dissipation, speed, and turning, based entirely on how many of the 4 engine critical slots they've lost.
4. Make standard engines give the CT a decent structure bonus.
While non canonical, I believe this departure from the tabletop rules would benefit MWO and stop the need for quirk bandaids.
IS XL mechs could lose a side torso, but critting an engine slot on the CT or other ST would take the mech out. Thus making the XL less of a niche application for IS.
Clan Xl could lose a side torso, and take two crits to the CT or lose the other ST. This is actually a nerf, but an intelligent and fair one.
There would now actually be a reason to use clan standard engines.
IN THE FUTURE, using this system, >without ANY SNOWFLAKE BANDAIDS AT ALL<, you could add XXL and light and compact fusion engines, and they would function perfectly as drop in engines.
Light fusion would have clan xl survivability, XXL would have OLD is XL weakness, and compact fusion engines would be the tankiest thing this side of the galaxy. (For compact, you would have to literally crit all four of the compact engine's slots to take it out)

Just a precaution, engines can't be crit in MWO (well they can, but no special effect is caused to them). You can only lose crits via destruction of that component area. Would have to be coded in

I'm pretty sure I've destroyed engines before with machineguns on cored yellow ct structure, and it even gave me a message "engine destroyed" on the screen and rewarded points, but I guess it could have been a fluke.
Oh well. If it's not actually a thing then it probably should be. With this you couldn't take an engine out in a single crit; you'd have to do either four in the CT or take out a side torso and then crit the other a few times.
