Yesterday i tried to put my Unit's Tag on my Mauler.
Once finished i noticed that D and H letters size is almost the same, but the B looks a bit smaller. The overall look was not good, and the sign doesn't look polished or smooth. Tried to make them all a bit bigger, then all smaller, but the issue remains, so i gave up.

Did you noticed that too with same letters or others?

The zero seems a pixel or two smaller than the rest of the numbers... so yes, I have noticed it

I think it is more to do with the way the game resizes decals.

If you shrink it all the way down in size, then go back up step by step they will all be the same size, as long as you only scale it either up or down. Not both or the scaling will be thrown off again.

Im guessing each step is +/-10% which is why they dont scale evenly if you use up and down.

I've noticed that when dekkles are saved they seem to reset their base size or something and resizing them again later makes it hard to get to consistent sizes, so if you want a couple to be the same size, always start fresh.

Just wanting to clarify what I posted

I think the issue is with the scaling

Take a number (eg = 100)
then
reduce that number by 10% (eg 100 x .9 = 90)
then
increase that number by 10% (eg 90 x 1.1 = 99)

As you can see, the numbers are different if you step in one direction and then the other.
From what ive noticed, this is the way resizing the decals works.
So to avoid the problem, resize all the way down and then increase the size in steps. If you overshoot, you need to go all the way down to smallest size and work your way back up, or your decals will not be the same size.

EDIT:
Also some places on Mechs do distort the decal anyway, so some of it may be an issue with that particular place on the Mech

It's precisely 1.3627781 pixels shorter in height than the rest of the numbers.

Very intresting. I got to try this next time I'm logged in. Thanks.

Also, a sidenote about the distortion. Is it just me or do you also feel most Mechs have to few flat spaces to actually put decals on? Alec made a great job with the new Mechs, but now I kinda wish they were a bit less detailed on a few spots. Also wish decals didn't stick on windows. I could make a few cool things around the cockpit if it didn't

Ive only really had problems finding a good spot on a few of my Clan Mechs due to details as many can have a decal placed over them and still look good. Actually, some of the ones I had to think outside the box with ended up looking the best.

The geometry on the Stormcrow made it hard to get 332 (my cluster) looking good. It's distorted a bit, but it'll do. Most wont notice anyway, i just makes the OCD come out in me.
Finding a place on the right leg of the Kodiak, Hellbringer and Summoner was troublesome and not ideal, and the lights were always going to be an issue due to their size.

Kinda wishing we could have up to 10 decals for some extra little details like placing warning signs on weapons so the Techs dont lose a limb. Hell, I think i could use 20.

Also some rank insignias, Roman numerals and the Greek alphabet would be great additions too

This is what I mean with the geometry distortion

And this is what I mean with trying to think out of the box for placement

I just press the reset button on the decal before trying to match sizes. Though I wouldn't be surprisd to see a difference in the actual size of the num in the dds of the decal...

I'll do a pass on the alphanumeric Decals to fix any slight variations in scale. Might be too late for December, so I'll get them sorted for January at the latest.
That said, I think there is an issue with scale changes when applying them that can lead to small variations, and the Decal layering depth may also be introducing small variations as well. I've spoken with engineering about that before, we'll try to get it looked at when we can.

Thx. I have also noticed when doing R4WR (our tag), the 4 is slightly off no matter what I do.

Regarding unit tags made from letter decals ...

are there lower case letters planned? or do I just not find them?
cause PhD looks weird when you have to write it in all upper case ...

Decals are very poorly implemented in this game.

No matter their visual size, they all have the same size "box" which makes it hard for them to be placed properly. Also, most mechs have very uneven, broken geometry, which also makes decal placement hard.

Then there's the moving decals bug.

Also, many mechs have geometry glitches that make certain mechs impossible to have decals placed on them symmetrically.

All in all - decals are not implemented as good as they could be. So your complaint is truly not surprising.

How to clone decals for size, layering and keeping the same angle of rotation:

View PostVonBruinwald, on 09 November 2018 - 08:59 AM, said:

There's several reasons you might want to clone a decal, for me it mostly down to symmetry, flipping decals and keeping the same proportions can be a pain sometimes. It can also be used to keep decals aligned when layering them; clone the decal, then swap it out for something else to keep the same position/size, particularly handy on mechs where the decals 'jump' when placed. MCII I'm looking at you.
  • Place the decal you want cloned in Slot 1,
  • Save your mech,
  • Drag the decal from slot 1 into slot 2,
  • Select slot 1,
  • Click "Reset to last saved",
  • Both slot now contain the same decal, same location, same size

Note: This does work with any combination of slots.

Can we get CLANBUSTER added as a decal while you're at it please. Thanks.
