As a long-term gamer, I remember the days of getting my games on CD-ROM and then losing them in a move or them getting scratched. With Steam, your games never get lost.

Steam honestly started out very bad with Half-Life 2 requiring you to be online to play alone, but it's biggest plus is what it's done for indie brew games and modders. You don't need backing and marketing to be successful. You're directly connected to gamers who are willing to throw money your way if you make something good.

Stardew Valley is the most recent example of that, but these indie devs are almost always making stuff that appeals to retro folks. It ain't too flashy.

Anyway the Night Stalkers poll came out to indicate about half the unit uses Steam and half uses the launcher. So a rough estimate of how many people play is to just double the Steam numbers and there you go.
