I don't think this would be a bad idea actually, or at least allow the choice of what mech to spawn with. Right now, maybe this is handled completely by the matchmaking algorithm (for better or worse), but I'm not sure if people have been experiencing really imbalanced types of mechs showing up each match.

from what i've heard, they are using 2 different systems together in their match making.

first, you select a mech you own, and search for a match with it.
the mech weight class (heavy, light etc) is noted, and it is given a threat rating (something like battle value, based on its speed, sensors, weapons, etc)

the match making system then looks for a team for you with free slots in your weight class, and enough threat rating available.

having limited slots for each weight class in a team ensures a good mix of roles.
having threat rating ensures balanced teams even when better technology is pitted against older tech.
a mech filled with only older tech will simply be worth less threat rating, allowing the matchmaker to put someone else with a higher threat rating than average in that team to balance it out.

I of course have not seen the user interface, so I have no way of knowing if this is already in place or is workable. However I would highly recommend that teams be limited either by overall tonnage or just the number of different classes of mech that can be fielded. This could be varied for different types of battles and missions.

I think this will effectively happen anyway.
Tonnage is not an accurate way of balancing sides, but even if it isn't used and a more accurate BV rating is used, larger mech will still take much larger chunks of the allowed BV for the side.

So my guess is you can sit back and relax, knowing that in all likelihood this is already taken care of! :)

I just wanted to point out that you are assuming that they can not or will not balance the weight classes. A little faith maybe?

I personally can't wait to watch twelve Jenners f*** over twelve Atlases.

And joining a match with only 20 tons of weight left will suuuuuuuuuck if you hate the role of scout.
