Hi all,

I was chatting to a friend yesterday and discussing the leg destruction issue. I remember back in the beta days when a leg was destroyed it was visibly removed from the mech in game (not just in the target information window). I vaguely remember this was done because of the extra physics load or something like that. Does anyone remember the real reason that has not found it's way into the final game or have a link to an old discussion? I've googled a bit and searched the forum but can't find the old reference.

Thanks,
3

I don't think the legs were EVER visually removed from the models.
The only game that was the case in that i remember was Mechwarrior 2, i think?

I would imagine it'd look... really odd... seeing a mech walking around with one leg, impossibly balanced. ^^

This was never a thing, mechs have always limped upon leg destruction.

When I started playing, I didn't like that legs didn't disappear, but if you think about it, mechs limping on a disabled leg looks better than them hopping on one. In terms of physics, it also makes more sense for the leg to still be providing some kind of support.

Now, if you could disable a leg and then go for a whole second level of total destruction, it would be pretty sweet watching an atlas spin around the ground still trying to kill people. But that's just a dream.

Lol, beginning to think I must have been. I have played since alpha so it's possible.

In battletech you automatically fall down when losing leg but can try to get up and continue hopping around in one leg. But it's extremely hard because you'll need a very good pilot and a guy who's really lucky with dice. Legging mech is practically death sentence, so I understand why removing legs aren't on the game because of pinpoint fire.

In MWO, leg destruction appears to be the analog of a hip critical hit in the tabletop game, which is pretty crippling. It takes down the speed of a 'mech significantly and makes it harder to pilot. At that point, you're better off making your way back to your lines or else eject.

Join date only shows when you started posting on the forums. I've been playing since Feb 2014 but my forum profile shows April.

There is a hugely busy forum post on the pro's and con's of leg destruction and what should happen. I'm not really taking a view on that and happy for status quo. I was just thinking it would be good to have a visual queue on the model that leg 'A' is effectively dead and you should be aiming for leg 'B'. The targeting info panel can be a bit confusing on which leg you should be aiming for.

Yeah, don't trust join date usually. I started playing right when the game left CBT, then took a huge break right before the Clans dropped. But since I had never posted on the forums back then, it claims I joined October 1st, 2015.

Personally, I'd rather keep legging from being an even easier option than it is currently. People highly underestimate how easy it to leg people, especially since there's almost no way to shield your legs. Having even more of a visual representation would make it that much easier.

What I would like is to have a better visual feedback for a destroyed leg. I want it to look like nothing but scrap metal held together with bundles of wire. The limping effect should also make it incredibly obvious which leg is broken. When the mech is limping, the broken leg should be nothing more than a stick it puts its weight on temporarily while shifting to the better foot.

False.

Which is a completely different date than when it left the Alpha.

I was here back in early closed beta, destroyed legs were never visibly removed from a mech in MWO. It would make no sense for them to be since MWO allows movement with one functional leg, something that simply wouldn't be possible if it was actually torn off (walking anyway).
