Now that tempers have cooled some after the tragic event on OSU, I'm going to make a quick post on a few precautions as well as a couple of methods of dealing with someone with a knife.

Shoes. Unless you are a martial artist who enjoys slipping your feet out of your sneakers to kick the daylights out of someone, keep them laced up. If they are flopping around on your feet you could loose a shoe or trip if you need to run. And ladies, yeah the shoe might be fashionable, but can you haul a$$ when you need too.

Pants: Make sure that your pants are comfortable. Pants at half mast or tight fitting pants inhibit your ability to run should the need arise. Which is more important, showing your butt off or saving it.

Backpacks full of books: When in school, your backpack is your friend. Not only can it carry your books but if faced with a knife wielding opponent from which escape is difficult or impossible, swing that puppy hard. P.S. Don't miss.

Umbrella: This object can keep the rain off your head. As a defensive item an open umbrella can thwart an attack using it as a makeshift shield. While it may not work very well it could save you from a nasty cut. Folded up you can use it as a baton and whack the hell out of them with it. Unfortunately the umbrella probably won't survive such a beating.

wow you realise, this is on par with terrorism when suddenly people chance these things in their life to such a degree because they have to expect such kind of events to happen and even take precautions on level of their clothings. A pepperspray or taser shall still work better than an umbrella.

Pepper spray and a taser are great, however teachers often frown on students packing such devices. In light of this, I'm using ideas concerning everyday objects that students might have with them while attending class and not get into trouble.
