Torso twist vs "leg twist"

We're used to torso twist changing the viewing angle, and leaving the running direction as is, but could we please have an option to reverse this?

So torso twist doesn't alter the view direction, but twists the legs underneath, to a new running direction.

This would result in controls much closer to modern FPS controls - which you have to assume have come about and endured because they're good...

Note: this is a suggestion for an OPTION, not a suggestion to force this on people who don't want it.

Because it's a simulator there shouldn't be an option for controls that are intuitive?? :P :P :D

Truthfully, yes. ;)

Basically, the second best thing about simulator games is the way they are different than the rest of all millions of games.
That's a very good thing since you want to feel like inside of the simulated vehicle and when the controls feel alien to you, it helps a lot.

I don't understand...

In a FPS you normally control where your "view" is facing and then separately control your movement.
Apart from the obvious arcade vs simulation aspects, how is this any different?

Sorry, but that's absolutely ridiculous.

The mech is simulated in the program, and can accept certain inputs to perform certain functions.

The way the player provides those inputs should be THE BEST WAY AVAILABLE. (which is subjective, of course)

And I'll point out again, I was suggesting an option, not a wholesale change. Your experience would remain completely unaffected.

Mouse controls head (torso) direction, fingers control run direction.

Well, the control scheme is like this, but instead of simply pressing W and D to go at 45 degrees, you can only press A and D to steer the direction and W and S to accelerate/decelerate. ;)

Do you mean perhaps that I'm worried about nothing, and this is already the way things are...
I'm starting to think this is the case! :P

I've always used a joystick, but am planning to switch to mouse/kybd for MWO - I think I've gotten confused about the switch and posted for nothing....

Hahaha, yeah I think this was a bit of a misunderstanding :P

I'm pretty sure that the movement controls will be intuitive enough that most players will be able to pick it up reasonably quickly. The fact that the mech will *turn* instead of strafe might take some people a bit of time to get used to, but it's not too different. Heck, all of the old-school FPS games had it this way before anyway ;)

I'm not sure, however, if they are implementing both the traditional "throttle" control for forwards/backwards movement as well as "press to move" buttons.

No, no, you weren't wrong (although I strongly disagree a sim shouldn't have the best controls possible because it's a sim)
