That's a very good thing since you want to feel like inside of the simulated vehicle and when the controls feel alien to you, it helps a lot.
Sorry, but that's absolutely ridiculous.
The mech is simulated in the program, and can accept certain inputs to perform certain functions.
The way the player provides those inputs should be THE BEST WAY AVAILABLE. (which is subjective, of course)
And I'll point out again, I was suggesting an option, not a wholesale change. Your experience would remain completely unaffected.

In a FPS you normally control where your "view" is facing and then separately control your movement.
Apart from the obvious arcade vs simulation aspects, how is this any different?
Mouse controls head (torso) direction, fingers control run direction.
