Everything is awesome with the video I'm watching right now -- new HUD, PVE, merc stuff?

Only way that HUD changes is if they replaced ScaleForm for the UI, and everything I'm seeing screams modern game engine! UPDATE: UNREAL 4!

It almost looks like an entirely new game!

This reminds me of the one of opening scenes from Decision at Thunder Rift

Not MWO - whole new game - Mechwarrior 5.

Yeah, but it's not unreasonable to assume/hope that they will be able to take the lessons learned and code written (looks like a substantial amount of ground has already been broken at least in porting assets) - one can always hope!

It will be in MW5 not MWO.

Yep, and the hope I was referring to was that they'd be able to port MW:O to Unreal 4

MWO funds MM5, MM5 facilitates engine swap and pays for MWO 2.0 on Unreal 4.

You will be dead before that happens.

Its MW5 but it does show they can move their game code to Unreal Engine. That's good news. That's very big news.

One of the things that struck me when I played Hawken was how well the Unreal Engine worked. When I went back to MWO it struck me how bad what MWO had for a modified version of the Crytek Engine, so immediately that came to me that's where MWO should go. Seeing Armored Warfare, which was on Crytek, changed my mind a little --- the graphics and the speed on that game was superb, but apparently it might cost much to license that version of the Crytek?

Recently trying out Fractured Space, which is on the Unreal Engine 4. Now that blew my mind --- they can use trailers using ingame footage and looked like that:

So if the MW franchise is finally moving to the Unreal Engine, that is very big news.

Precisely. Something arguing against a move anytime soon though come from reading the Dec. Roadmap -- it appears significant fixes and changes are being made to the game engine code (which is less likely to be portable, barring the inclusion of that type of "fix" from whatever automation PGI's put together for porting resources/assets)

They won't need to change what is running.

What they need is to recreate the game with the new engine on a separate room, then test it, add features, debug and refine until they are ready for the great migration.

There are some games that made a magnificent engine migration. EVE Online was one of them. Others include Final Fantasy 14 and World of Tanks.

Essentially MW5 can be used to demo MWO2, and I am pretty sure MW5 would use a considerable amount of MWO's code.

With the 2016 World Championship done with, the added pressure of needing to verify and maintain a separate tourney build is reduced - for the e-sport aspect of MWO, changing engines takes on greater impact since a missed exploit or defect can really break a tourney's integrity.

Code-wise, it's an unfortunate reality that the areas of the current game engine which received the most attention and customization - e.g. the most effort are likely to be the least likely to be reusable in a new engine. Not just simply due to the fact that much was done to work around CryEngine limitations, but because the new engine has different qualities and constraints than the old, meaning that even if PGI encounters similar development problems the same solutions may not apply.
