Nerves were a very big thing and having next to no time on zero ping definitely worked against us as well. We've found there's a ton of subtle things you get used to in Oceanic which are completely different in a local ping scenario. Vertical HSR is the biggest problem, jumpjet calculations are server side, so in Oceanic when people poptart they "float" for a second before hitting the ground. In zero ping, the calculations are instant so the second the jumpjets stop the mech falls. This means that hitting poptarts requires a different mental calculation and caused a lot of our shots to miss what we would normally hit.
We've already suggested to PGI this information, incase of future tournaments and suggested giving Oceanic players access to PC's in advance to get used to this. As it was, 228 spent two days in our hotel room on garbage hotel wifi trying to do co-ordinated pub drops and practice scrims with huge packet loss - all while jetlagged and some of us seriously sick.
Definitely not our A game and definitely not our best match preparation. Our maneuver timing was also a bit out on the night.
All said and done, our last game we loaded up our favourite mechs and decided to YOLO into the enemy team, making sure that we went down in a blaze of glory with smiles on our faces playing the game that we all love.
An awesome opportunity for me and the team. PGI are wonderful people and great to hang out with socially. They treated us really really well and they were always happy to talk to everyone, regardless of how drunk they were. :-)
And George is a legend and a totally nice guy to talk to. My drink card went to a worthy place!
