Today, your current Cryengine guru's at PGI aren't going to take time to be trained concurrently in U4. That hurts everyone's ability to produce on both sides. Though, it is currently profitable for them to keep improving MWO as it helps heal the community rift and ensure sales of MW5 which is the beginning of the shift to MWO 2.0 in UE. Continuing to improve and refine the underlying gameplay/model for MWO as it currently stands, allows them to set the base structure for what works in terms of things like FP or gametypes/modes/pricing and basic features of the MWO model and bring that forward to UE funded mostly by MW5. They just need to emulate what is successful in MWO 1.0 over to UE and MWO 2.0 and then go as far as UE allows in terms of new features and ease of use.
Aligning with the renewal of the licensing deal and the continued success/growth/health of the franchise... the plan is pretty obvious and mostly sound.

I would love to see coop. But I'm just glad to see single player at all.

I like your theory. It sounds very plausible. I guess I can say that my initial post was a bit biased due to the history of PGI and what to expect. I guess I just have to sit back and watch things unfold and hope for the best.

Horde mode, co-op play, all seem to come with PvP multiplayer in most games, not in lieu of it.

Before you start bashing my judgement on MW5 as if I don't know **** about making videogames, watch this:
I'd even be willing to help with the creation of MW5 MP for free.. I'll layout maps all day free of charge. It's my passion. Too bad that's not how the gaming industry works..
Why on god's green earth would they add multiplayer to MW5: Mercs when they have a Mechwarrior game completely devoted to the multiplayer experience ?
I swear....do people not even THINK before starting topics like this ?

You're right, you don't. You seem to give no thought of the 6 year gap. It would be different if they overhauled MWO to fit the current generation of gaming, but it's hard to see PGI doing that with their past record. This is the passive aggressive and ignorant **** I'm talking about. It's sad to see that people can't even fathom what I'm saying.

I do give thought to the 6 year gap. It is not unrealistic to think this single player game could also be used as a test platform for PGI to decide if they want to port MWO over to Unreal. You have absolutely NO IDEA what PGI plans to do with MWO and the ignorant thing is thinking you do. People have dumped hundreds or perhaps even thousands of dollars into this game. Do you really think those people would be pleased to hear this game was closing down for any reason ? Alienating even more of your player base at this point is not really an option PGI can afford to make at this point. I understand what you were originally trying to convey but there is no way that they would scrap an established game with an already wary community who may or may not have started bailing out like rats on a sinking ship. Better to keep MWO and possibly port or update the engine than throw it away and have so many pissed off people, your new single player game ends up with no further funding.

it looks like much of that work is being done now. seems pgi has worked out a path for asset conversion from the old engine to the new. thats the easy part though. if you have to change programming languages like lua -> unrealscript or something like that, that means a lot of dev time. it does however make more sense to use the mw5 systems instead, rather than port over the equivalent system from mwo. like mw5 mech combat seems like its in place, so why redo the mwo system (unless it is significantly different). port over the player inventory databases (i have a hunch this is on a separate database server independent of the game engine and you just need to implement the client interface to that database within the game).
merging the tech base would cut down on support costs, futureproof mwo, and allow for a more consolidated talent pool. if you need to hire people down the line, you dont need to look for people who also have legacy cryengine knowhow, you just need ue4 people, and they can work on whatever product needs them.

Besides that Russ already stated it was going to be a singleplayer game only and that one could only imagine what they could do with MP blah blah blah. Point is, I was going off of that statement alone. Now, if you're talking about Russ not living up to his word and ignoring said statement, then I would understand what you're saying entirely. I just didn't appreciate the think before you speak comment you decided to throw in.
EDIT: My mistake. I thought you were talking about MW5, not MWO. You're right, I don't know the plans they have for MWO and it was a bit ignorant, but from PGI's track record and announcing a singleplayer only game to be released 2018, you can see why I made the assumption. Regardless, I'll be buying MW5 for the singleplayer action, but if MWO doesn't receive a major upgrade, I doubt I'll be playing it by that time. That's simply all I was trying to say.
