It will linger on for a time.
When it stops outputting cash, Russ and Paul will take it fishing.

What I hope will happen:
MW5 brings new players to try out MWO after they finish the campaign. PGI becomes very familiar with the new engine and switches MWO over to it and discovers that it is much much easier to develop for fostering in a development renaissance.
What I fear will happen:
PGI will release a lackluster version of all of the announced items for MWO and will secretly declare MWO finished as far as active development goes while telling us good things are still coming. We will continue to see monthly mech packs and maybe if we are lucky a new map each year with most of the revenue being siphoned off to other projects. The player base will continue to dwindle with heavy loses around the release of Battletech. Within 6 months of the release of MW5 PGI will announce a big sale on mechs and other items within MWO only to shut the servers down shortly thereafter.
What I think will likely happen:
Something between what I hope and what I fear leaning towards the fear side.

I think MWO will do ... OK.
I've said this elsewhere, but with HBS BT and MW5:M coming, it doesn't have to be a zero-sum game with one game losing players and others gaining. Those new games will get new players to the franchise, and I'm sure some of those will be attracted towards a PvP FPS experience and try out MWO.
However, PGI will have to struggle to find continued resources to develop MWO and not let it stagnate. I'm already finding myself taking two-month breaks from the game, though thus far also coming back. Apart from a better CW, MWO badly needs more maps. With the map voting thrown in, our "effective number of maps", if you will, is down to 5 or so. It's getting really stale.
My guess though, if PGI's successful with MWO5:M, we will eventually see a PvP "MWO2" developed based on MWO5:M.
