3rd Royal Guards is a Lyran Unit tho.

True, and fair enough.

Moreover, the fact that everyone (in the AFFS and LCAF, anyway) is essentially one big, (somewhat) happy (and perhaps slightly dysfunctional) family under the banner of the Armed Forces of the Federated Commonwealth (officially established in 3041) means that the Lyran unit can have, and be excited about, the shiny new FedSuns assault 'Mech, yes? :)

The DVS 1 is a FedSun mech, the DVS-2 is made by Norse Storm who were a major Lyran manufacturer and after the Federated Commonwealth fell apart Norses-Storm produced mechs solely for Lyran.

Mmm, that's a nice-looking 'Mech. Darn good loadout. Would love to bring one of those into battle. BAM, twin Gauss rifles. BAM, twin PPCs. Then quad mediums to mop up what's left? Heck yes. Okay, so one of the mediums is supposed to be rear-mounted, which is something I'm personally not used to, but if we have irritating AI infantry that actually poses a genuine threat, then I'm all for it. I may have found my new favorite 'Mech if this thing makes it into the game.

The DVS 1 is a FedSun mech, the DVS-2 is made by Norse Storm who were a major Lyran manufacturer and after the Federated Commonwealth fell apart Norses-Storm produced mechs solely for Lyran.

From Norse-Storm's Sarna page:

Quote

While the Storm's Metal Thunder Mercenary unit was garrisoning Loxley in 3034, its commanding officer Captain Griff Storm discovered the remains of a Star League era 'Mech factory. With substantial loans from the Lyran goverment and aid of business partner Samuel Norse, the factory was eventually brought back online as Norse-Storm BattleMechs in 3046. Desperate to ensure their survival, the company signed a license agreement to produce well-received Devastator Assault BattleMech. The company has since expanded, re-introducing further lostech Star League era designs. Originally producing 'Mechs for the AFFC, Griff Storm's immense loyalty to House Steiner led to company producing exclusively for the LAAF upon the Federated Commonwealth's dissolution.

And from the DVS-2's Solaris7 entry:

Quote

The Devastator was built from a Star League-era design, discovered in 3023 by Davion troops in the remains of a Star League base on the planet Hoff. Inner Sphere scientists and BattleMech manufacturers, however, lacked the technology to build the Gauss rifles, extra-light engines, and double heat sinks the design required. The blueprints for the Devastator languished in the files of the New Avalon Institute of Science for ten years, until advanced technological information uncovered in the Gray Death memory core enabled House Davion to construct a prototype of the BattleMech.

And the DVS-2's Sarna page:

Quote

After its deployment in the battle for Terra, the Devastator remained lost to the Inner Sphere for centuries, until troops from the Federated Suns chanced upon the blueprints in a Star League base on the world of Hoff in 3023. A downgraded version of the 'Mech was prototyped in 3033 by the NAIS, using technology available at the time. It was not until 3044 that a Devastator appeared that was constructed using the intended technologies (DVS-2); this version was finally put in production by 3048.

Moreover:

Quote

In 3020, Archon Katrina Steiner of the Lyran Commonwealth issued a "Peace Proposal" to all of the Great Houses of the Inner Sphere; only First Prince Hanse Davion of the Federated Suns responded, and the two states began a long-running dialogue. In 3020 the two Successor States signed the FedCom Accords, a treaty which formalized military, scientific and economic exchange between the two states.

So far, we have:
- The original Star League design was rediscovered by Davion troops on a Davion-held world.
- The post-Star League prototype (DVS-1) was built by Davion scientists/techs a decade after the original design's rediscovery.
- The FedCom Accords provide for military and scientific exchanges (such as BattleMechs) between the FedSuns and the Lyrans.
- Devastators with the intended technologies (Gauss Rifles, Double Heat Sinks, XL engines) were seen in 3044, while Norse-Storm was not operational until 3046 (two years later); someone other than Norse-Storm produced the first modern DVS-2s.
- Those modern DVS-2s built by Norse-Storm are built under a license agreement with (read: permission of) some entity within the FedSuns (as part of the Accords).

The above supports the claim that the modern Devastator is a FedSuns design despite being produced under license by Lyrans, in much the same way that the F-16 is still an American design despite also being built under license by South Korea (as the KF-16).

-----

Though... given that Aleksandr Kerensky, designer of the Star League era Devastator, is a graduate of Tharkad University and the Nagelring, it is implied - but not confirmed - that Kerensky himself may have been a Lyran by nationality, which if true would make the production of DVS-2s in Lyran space something of a "coming full circle".

Manufacturing costs probably don't even exceed that of a complete medium attack lance. And of course the technicians go all gaga at the prospect of maintaining gauss equipment in the field. I'm sure they will look stunning in parade formation, but when the sky begins to fall I'll keep to my Griffins and Wolverines thank you.
