most people said the Locust

Locust never got gud. Everything else just got bad.

"Protect your teammates when/as you can" should be a job for everybody, yeah. If you're the only option for responding to a threat against your team's fatbros, then you'd best respond.

But like you said - 'fair', one-on-one dogfights between lights are to be avoided. They're a waste of both 'Mechs, and not what (most) properly built lights should be looking to do as their primary task. No matter how much bad assault drivers want to try and convince the light pilots - and the medium pilots, and the heavy pilots - that the entire game revolves exclusively around them.
