I'll start this with the following disclaimer: I am NOT an "elite" pilot, or from a "Tier 1" unit. We do play as a unit and "generally" play well together.... although friendly fire penalties are a way of life when we're bored.....fed-up....who am I kidding? When we play together, we shoot each other :D

However, I am seeing an uptick in the number of "solo" droppers in FP mode... especially on the IS side of the Faction divide.

I spent a good portion of a drop on Friday night trying to direct a group of "solo's" to the FRR/Kurita hub to drop with a group and gain the true experience of FP mode. I can only hope that the current crop of IS Mercs and FRR/Kurita Loyalists will pick-up some of these players and show them the ropes.

My advice beyond grouping up would be:

* Optimize your 'Mechs: You have a HUUUUUUGE range of variety for builds but each map has a "theme". Some are adaept for close range, brawler type builds, others are slanted towards long range ERLL or ERPPC type builds. IS 'Mechs that are properly "skilled" can trade at ERLL range with Clan on Polar but a single BLR (Battlemaster) with ERLL cannot out trade 3x Gauss/PPC NTG (NightGyr)... regardless of how you build it. Teamwork wins over 'Mech builds.
* NEVER...EVER bring LRMs without checking to see if you have someone that can support you. A single Light 'Mech with TAG or NARC can turn a group of useless LRM "boats" into a true, Royal PITA for the enemy team. (guess what)
Teamwork wins over yet again.

Pretty much every example of a scenario I can give ends in: TEAMWORK BEATS (fill in the blank).

TL:DR Get on TS (teamspeak), group up, speak to experienced players and LEARN.

(This PSA was brought to you bye a drunk Scotsman, have a nice day :) )

Why speak such sense PUG?

Clearly sober...

Concur - Get on TS. I went on a FP bender last week for nearly 24hrs. Many players came and went, I threw my WLR out the window but hopefully people had fun and saw what a half organised team can do (we did win quite a bit overall).

Hell I even dropped with my buddy naterist! :D

I just don't get it mate, are their that many new players? So many of the lessons I've learned the hard way over the last 5 years seem to be holy scripture or mythology to the current crop. I think the Skill Tree has a lot to do with it but I wish they would listen and join up on TS and learn.

Nah it's that most of the active/regulars have stopped playing. So the dilution is less in terms of good players to new/PUGs.

Look at the leaderboards as the proof. I think I've played 6-7 days of FP since the new season (hell I was Overseas for 2 weeks). So I think I've played ~100 games or so... I'm right near the top 100.

See last season I had to play twice a week, and 4-6hrs sessions just to stay inside the top 200 for the first 4 months because there were so many playing. The fact I'm in top 100 so easily/fast, means the most regular of FP people have really dropped off since S2 which coincides with Skill Tree - no surprise, I know a few people who've stopped since May.

Yeah, the ST and lack of concerted effort to take a planet has all but killed FP for me and many of the "old guard" in IDI. I wish it wasn't the case bu there it is :(

You need more super aggro Orion VA charges in your diet to regain the desire to play FP, pug. Trust me, doing the atlas cascade on river city is fun but prions are even more fun somehow.

FRR hub is a great place to learn Faction play.
I'd like to encourage everyone willing to give it a shot to drop by.

Microphone optional, just as long as you listen to the dropcalling.

It is weird reading through this and some of the other more popular FW forums , seems to be same complaints that keeps coming up. If one wants to win in FW you gotta join a unit that plays FW or go to the various faction TS to drop with other like minded FW players. Otherwise if one pugs in FW you will probably loose approx.4 out of 5 matches, just how it is. It is a group game, FW is supposed to be the upper end of that compared to quick play drops (I think?, maybe I am wrong in thinking that).
I used to get mad at loosing at pugging in FW, now I just don't care and play for fun. I find this mode of gameplay more interesting than quick play and find it an interesting challenge. Obviously I am not helping to solve any of the obvious FW issues, kinda exacerbating the problem by FW pugging. I just don't care anymore since I get some enjoyment out of it once in a while.
Cheers.

This is brilliant! Especially after all the arguments around here with you and him, with myself included at one time. Hope you and he had fun!

On a separate note though, its true, playing with a unit is much better. Since i joined PUG's unit as a recruit, it has been much more fun dropping when i get the chance. Its been a bit quiet lately, but that is the nature of online games.

The trick with units is, to find one that matches your preferred kind of play. I was put off units for a while, because some i had been in previously demanded a certain attendance and training regime which i found annoying. Especially when already experienced at the game and dropping with units.

Then i tried IDI, and found that some units can be good, get good results, and still be relaxed.

Set the brown sea for what it is, let differing opinions be and get on with dropping and winning. I argue plenty with people here, still drop with them.

That's the point of FP right there. For the greater good, for victory!

Doesn't take much to get on TS, follow whoever is calling and (try) smash face :)
