In games I used to enjoy playing you got to see familiar faces. I've been playing a lot of MWO over the last week, all times of the day. And I've only seen a few familiars. Maybe the population is too high for it to happen? Is it because I'm rank 3 and have access to lobbies with rank 1-5 players and it gets better at rank 1?

In any case I think there should be static lobbies available so people can keep playing on "US WEST 01" also known as "Clan Blood Spirit Planets" or something and get to know each other more and be more open to voice comms.. etc. The randomized match maker new games have like Call of Duty is really annoying a puts me off playing because I never get to see familiar faces. Does it get better eventually here?

Join units... even though the game has a small population, there are to many people on at a given time to run into the same folks to often.. Sure i see some folks from time to time, but when you got 2-3k players on at a given time, and those people play a bit, and a few hours later another few thousand folks are in.. it's hard to see people a lot..

Use your friends list.. make friends, join a unit.. that is the best way.. And we can always hold out hope that they add chat rooms one day... :)

Chat channel would be great idea. Besides getting to know people, it would be really easy for beginners to get help for quick questions. I barely have enough time for small talk at the start of the game... it's hard to get to know people to join a unit I guess during that time.

And yeah I come from games and servers with max 100 different regulars. Does it say anywhere how many players are online in MWO?

I run into familiar faces all the time though, even when not grouping up with people. As your friends list populates and you play enough to see people who frequently play, so will the probability of running into familiar faces. It's just a fact of probability.

And yes, you actually get to see more familiar faces at either Rank 1 or Rank 5. Rank 3 has the worst spread of them all, as you have the widest range of viable matchups according to the matchmaker. Because of the way it works, the MM attempts to seed a match at a given tier, and then populates it with all waiting players of said tier; when no more are available, then it widens the search to one up or one down. This makes it so that T1 players have the highest probability of running only into other T1 or T2, with a smattering of rare T3s; same goes with T5 with T5/4/3. T3, on the other hand, can find themselves dropped into literally any tier match.

@Fox With a Shotgun It would be cool to know the average tier of the lance(s) in the pre-game lobby. Maybe not individual stats to keep some anonymity. But enough to tell me what tier of game I'm in. I always wondered why my score can vary so drastically from game to game sometimes, not accounting for dumb mistakes and getting hurt early.

Maybe, if tier meant anything. Perhaps early on it kind of did, but we are to the point where the majority of people in tier1 got there because of moderate competent grinding, not because they are better than 80% of the population.
