Definitely avoid the Light and Assault steam pack. The heavy gets you a very popular IS and Clan pick, and the Mediums are pretty solid.
But, and this is the big but; as everyone said, mech packs overall get you more value (as well as longevity as you get more variants to play around with and tweak.) It comes down to how much you want to spend and which consistent mechs you're after of course, as well as Clan or IS. Personally I look at play longevity quite a bit along with if the pack is a solid mech; I like having options to play and tinker with.
Some mech packs input that may be helpful:
-Kodiak and Marauder IIC packs; top tier to solid performance as Assaults, both with ridiculously fun heroes. -LOTS- of build options to keep you occupied.
-Marauder Pack: solid mechs, a fun (if slow) hero. Good amount of build options.
-Night Gyr Pack: solid to top tier mechs again, nice hero, decent amount of build options to boot despite being a slow mover.
-The 1st two tiers of the IIC pack; the very fun (and downright brutal with some variants) Jenner IIC and the Hunchback IIC, with every variant you could want that cover a good range of diverse builds.
-The first three tiers of the Clan Wave 3... 3 ebons, 3 shadowcats, 3 arctic cheetahs, all solid mechs with the EBJ having many build options, Cheetahs being great beginner lights and Shadowcats being great poptarts. For a new buyer, I doubt anyone would be disappointed. One of the better multi-mech packs out there for the buckage, with the Executioner still being fun, if very overshadowed by other mechs these days if one ever wanted to upgrade it. Really though, you could just snag a Marauder IIC pack to round out the Assaults though without ever touching the EXE.
-Resistance wave 2 is a bit wishy washy after the Wolfhounds got resized, but you still get Crabs (a decent, often very survivable medium), Black Knights (not as ridiculous as they were but still popular among some folks), and Maulers (still a strong IS assault). A bit overly energy biased outside of the Mauler, but overall you get a nice amount of play out the pack.
-Resistance wave 1: Grasshoppers are still very popular, strong IS mechs out of it, and the Enforcers give you some good energy and ballistic options for a medium, but... eh. As much as I enjoyed the Zeus, it's outclassed, and the Panthers always had a troublesome spot (worse after resize).
-Clan Waves 1 and 2; Individual chassis like the Hellbringer and Timberwolf are great picks, though a la carte prices can be a bit high compared to recent mech packs (making it prohibitive price wise), and you get more value overall I find with the first 3 tiers of Wave 3 for similar tonnage brackets a much better purchase. If you're grabbing a bigger pack, you may as well be able to easily fill different tonnage/role brackets instead of feeling like you need to grab a pack here, there and elsewhere to muster it.
-Warhammer Pack; Solid build diversity, great mechs and a strong Hero. Can't go wrong with it, probably my favorite single chassis mech pack. Much prefer it to my Marauders (and I do love me some Marauders), but that's due to playstyle.
-Urbie Pack; I grabbed mine with Faction Loyalty MC in the past. I wouldn't put real bucks into them. Fun, but really not a serious consideration.
-MC packs in the in-game store; Jenner pack gets you the Oxide and some decent lights, the Griffin Pack gets you a solid Hero and a great variant. While pricey, the Battlemaster bundle gets you a great variant and a solid hero.
I'll be blunt; I consider the Rifleman (which I do own, though waited via c-bills), Phoenix Hawk, Viper, and in very particular, the Archers to be wastes of money. Big wastes of money. I know some folks love some of these, but they generally all are heavily overshadowed by other options, or are downright -bad- as a first time buyer. The Rifleman can be a load of fun, but I'd rather have the Jaegers rolling out, they just feel really badly redundant.
No outlooks regarding Linebackers; I'm waiting on them for C-bills, but they don't seem like a good first time purchase compared to more solid choices.
