Where do you get the kill counter with the skulls?

You already have it. It is in every 'Mech. Use the ALT <- left-control key to look around the cockpit and find it.

To build upon what Raubwurst stated, every mech has the kill counter in a different position inside the cockpit. For example, the Ebon Jaguar's is easily accessible and doesn't need the ALT CTRL key to look at regardless of your FOV setting. However, the Catapult's is not as obvious and requires you to use the ALT CTRL key in order to find it above the glass. If you're unable to locate it and there's a blank screen instead, it's possible that you might have the 'Enable Cockpit Monitors' setting unchecked.

Thanks!

I backed up the field of view and was able to see it in my catapult. But I was not able to look around the cockpit by using ALT. I looked it up under: settings -> keyboard and the Left ALT key is for MASC (a sort of speed boost button). Which leads to another noob question, how do you use ALT look around the cockpit?

Hm. Maybe they changed the default key settings.
Check which key is assigned to "free look", press and hold it down and move the mouse, your torso won't move, but you will be able to look around the cockpit (IIRC your arms will move too).

My mistake, the default key for Free Look should be Left CTRL! I guess I'm too used to playing in mechs that don't have the counter playing hide and seek. Posted Image

I hope you've been enjoying your time in the Catapult by the way; it's a fine piece of machinery if you can look past how easy it is to get your side torsos blown off these days. Posted Image

That was my mistake... I really thought it was alt ... don't know why ... grumble grumble...

For preventing future mistakes: Here is a grafic with the default keyboard layout Posted Image

From the "GAME" tab above, there are a lot of useful grafics inside!

Edit:
Arg. I know why... Played too much Arma 3 and to little MWO the last days... always confusing the damn buttons now... Yesterday I wanted to zoom in and press Mouse2 and shot my lasers right through our own formation on river city... damn muscle memory ...
