I probably should have phrased it differently then. What I mean is that it should at least be printable ascii characters only (codes 32-127), and not extended ascii (alt-codes). To a minimum... I could live with that. Anything above code 127 or below 32 fall in the non-printable or extended ascii range and those are the codes that are hard to type when you don't know them, as they don't appear on their own key on the keyboard (depending on the keyboard's language)

Here's a link that shows the different classes (if you may call them that) of ascii characters: http://www.ascii-code.com/

I'd missed what you ment by rephrasing that to codes 32-127 being acceptable, that I can live with as well.

Already implemented. Special characters will be stripped at some point in the future.

Is this what you ment, the chars above codes 127 can't be used and can still use codes 32-127?

Wow, haters much? its a shame that in the future im not going to be able to make my nametag look unique, i use alt-codes for this reason, plus i like the way it looks.
As for those using(abusing?) alt-codes to come up with offensive tags, cheers for that :P

I think they should allow the stuff.

That way everyone can see who the goobers are who are silly enough to try and be "cool" by using ascii art in their handles... :P

Man, what a lack of dedication. At least torch their cars or something.

Seriously, though, I applaud the devs for blocking special characters in names. If nothing else it sends a message that juvenile horsehockey isn't encouraged here.

The alt-codes in my name aren't excessive, its not an attempt to try and look "cool", i wouldn't consider it juvenile either, its common practice in all games, done out of personal preference.
Shame the forum warriors here can't relax forcing their opinions on others, but then its evident right across these forums.

To each their own, personally I do find it excessive. Probably wouldn't be nearly as bad without the TM. Still, "Khetti" is highly unlikely to ever be duplicated, so I don't see why the extra fiddly bits are needed in the first place.

It's one thing to have a name tag with alt-codes that look cool in a multiplayer fps where there is no slash commands or private chat system.

It's another entirely to have it in a complex MMO-like system where your pilot name is linked to a profile (visible from the web), database records (for stat tracking), and other dependent systems. Not only does it adds complexity in the way you have to build your database queries and other commands to account for those special characters (which have to be escaped or properly displayed using UTF8), and is especially a nuisance when others have to type your full name using slash commands (i.e. to ignore, report, invite or open a private chat with you). Sure there can be an ID too (actually there must be for database's sake), but having to fetch an ID using another command is not convenient and it's harder to remember.

I've never actually seen any MMO or MMO-like game that allowed alt-codes and special characters in player names for all the reasons above. MWO is no different. It's not just a matter of opinion.

That said, a lot of people find that special characters and alt-codes in character names don't look cool, but rather look annoying. The late 90's called back and they want their alt-codes back!
