Ever wondered what the consensus view on mouse settings and how/when to use arm lock among the more competitive crowd in MWO really is? Well, wonder no more. Tarogato has once again brought us a brilliant survey/spreadsheet that polls the comp community on their preferences.

It's on reddit: https://www.reddit.c...se_sensitivity/

And the spreadsheet itself: https://docs.google....tMXo/edit#gid=0

I think most will be happy to see that there's no "right" answer to these questions, but there is a pretty consistent range of answers, at least on your effective mouse dpi in-game (which Taro is calling edpi).

Arm lock and fov preference varies considerably, so next time some Tier 1 a-hole (like me) tells you you're doing it wrong, you can point here and give them their comeuppance.

Enjoy.

Edited to add:

You'll notice there's no questions about Smooth and Acceleration. Among the comp community, these are pretty much settled issues. Keep both of those values set to zero. I'd be happy to explain why if anyone is curious.

I recently decided to look at my DPI, FOV and put the arm lock toggle onto my mouse.

I spent a full day of changing one setting at the end of each match until I was happy.

I finished the day with FOV 60, DPI 800 and I switch the Arm lock on and off during the match. I do not care for scoreboards due to limited play time (I think i am somewhere around 200-250 on average match score) but I feel much more comfortable and competent during matches.

I used to have my DPI set at almost 2,000 and I used to score a kill or two per match, now I will admit I still score one or two per match... But I do it on purpose...

Whoa whoa there.

Why is Sensitivity set to .1? Going to go on a limb and suggest perhaps its for torso mounted weapons? I know if I run anything with arms I like to be able to snap around quickly.

Sensitivity is only part of the equation. In-game mouse movement is the product of your mouse's native dpi setting and the sensitivity setting in the MWO client. So if I run my mouse at 3500 dpi and sensitivity of 0.1, my effective in-game dpi is 350 (my actual setting). If you run your mouse at 350 dpi and your sensitivy at 1.0 you get the same effective dpi of 350.

prtnspz, arguably the best player in the game (cough, cough),runs at 450 dpi and 0.8 for an edpi of 360. I feel like I'm in decent company. ;)

I whip around pretty fast with these settings. Most comp players are running at an effective dpi somewhere between 70-ish and 200-ish. I'm on the high side at 350. And Scurro's just a freak of nature at 1430.

Realize that a lot of competitive shooter players use physically different motions on the mouse than your regular Puglandia bongo.

They use low mouse sensitivities (eDPI, as Khereg mentions), very large mousepads, and their entire arm to maneuver the mouse. Proven to be a more reliable/trainable method of producing consistent results, if also wildly uncomfortable and hard on the arm for marathon gaming sessions, which is why us horrible scrub schlubs who have no idea how video games work rest our arms on our desks and maneuver the mouse with our wrists, instead.

Nevertheless, that methodology requires different settings than typical gamers use, which may help put the survey in context.

The simple method I've used for years for setting mouse sensitivity is to place mouse in the middle of your mousepad, and slowly move it all the way to the edge, observing how far you turn. Then just adjust sensitivity and repeat until it makes you turn 180-190 degrees. The size of your mousepad will greatly affect the end result, so it is going to be catered only to your current setup.

To compare to this method, I use a Cyborg Rat 7 Albino set at 3600 DPI, with MWO sensitivity set to 0.1, so my effective DPI sits at 360 with my current mousepad. The toggle button under the thumb reduces it to 1200 DPI, or 120 eDPI, for long range precision. In other games it gets more complicated since they usually are also affected by Windows' mouse settings, and I run my mouse at its full 6400 DPI. But the above test always nets a good result without getting complicated.

my general preference to keep my arms locked comes from the fact that i prefer torso mounts to arm mounts and tend to put the better weapons in the torso. i hate loosing the bulk of my firepower when an arm gets shot off. i dont need the freelook aspects of running with armlock off since i use head tracking. third major issue is that running unlocked makes me extremely nauseous, which is inexplicable because i seldom get motion sickness from games (biggest offenders are minecraft, and classic doom on a 16:9 monitor). still i have arm lock toggle mapped to a very prominent button on my throttle, and i do use it from time to time, to shoot uavs or track a light mech for example.

my fov is still default, i tried changing it but didnt like other settings. im not sure what my mouse dpi is, my mouse has 4 dpi levels and i used the second lowest setting. mouse sensitivity is at 0.5.

I can't imagine what benefit a macro would have for competitive players outside of using more firing groups than they have buttons on the mouse, or chain firing in a specific pattern. The vast majority of other macros take control away from you, something competitive players need least.

Any macro that prevents you from firing your UAC's isn't worth having. Also ditto with lasers, as you need to personally keep an eye on heat.

they have a macro that prevents you from firing a UAC?

I know that jets have what you might call a Macro that keeps them from firing at different times
