Im having issues with SSRMs not locking on. Even when I tag a target still its like if the target is to close it doesnt lock. Any help with using these? I usually use SRMs but wanting to be lazy lately

Have you tried hitting R?

Serious question. You can only lock onto targets that you already maintain sensor lock on. So you need to hit R to first acquire a sensor lock against the opponent, and then the missile lock process will start when you have your cursor over your sensor lock.

Beyond this, your opponent might be carrying ECM. Which prevents mechs from getting sensor locks. So some form of ECM counter can ensure that you can attack your opponent.

In the case for streaks, BAP is often preferred to counter ECM within Streak range.

if you are taking SSRMs, especialy if they are your primary weapon you should have an Active Probe (ether Beagle or Clan) as it disables enemy ECM allowing you to get a lock on targets under ECM, and yes of course SpiralFace is correct about making sure you have a target lock (R by default).

you can speed missile lock times by fitting Artemus (benefits Streaks without charging you weight or slots) and/or TAG

I am too lazy to use streaks, I find it much much easier to aim and shoot with SRMs than to get and hold the missile lock for SSRMs, also the superior reload rate of SRMs, and the fact you can (to an extent) choose where on the target they hit, in my opinion, makes SSRMs vastly inferior to regular SRMs

LOL yes i hit R.
I run 3 SSRM on a shadowcat with beacon and tag, specifically to bypass ecm, but its like if the target is within 50m there just isnt a lock. IDK all morning its been 50/50. I know they aren't popular so i wasnt sure if there are any issues with it.

So what you might be encountering is the effects of ECM.

typically, ECM will prevent all missile locks within a 90 meter radius from the target. TAG will counter the "cloak effects" of ECM, but it won't "disable" the ECM like BAP does.

In this case, its either preferable to just take BAP, or make sure you are engaging against an opponent with ECM outside of 90 meters. Anything closer, and the ECM will prevent you from getting target locks.
