I started having trouble with MWO crashing. It started about six months ago, but has been happening more and more frequently up to the present where it seems to happen once or twice a day.

The screen goes black or gray and I have to Ctrl Alt Delete and open Task Manager to get out. I have also tried Alt Tab to get back to my desktop, but it does nothing. Whenever MWO crashes it tries to send a crash report, but it doesn't work.

Below is a screen shot of the messages I get when it happens.

How can I fix this?

This seems to indicate more of a hardware issue than anything, especially with it being so sporadic and increasing in frequency over the past few months. Usually this is caused by things like your GPU overheating from for example dust buildup, an overclock going bad over the years or even your PSU going bad and not delivering clean power anymore. This makes it quite difficult to accurately diagnose... :(

On the software side, are you running the latest version of your graphics drivers?

try DX9. PGI's DX11 is s**t. It used to hard crash my system every other game on a bad day. I thought it was a hardware issue until I switched to DX9. Not a single crash since.

I am running the latest version of my graphics drivers.

CPU max temp is 46C and GPU max temp is 73C in the last PUG I did half an hour ago.

I am not having problems in any other games.

The crashing got really bad after the last round of patches.

I just switched to DX9 and going to give that a try here in about 5 min.

I use DX11 in other games without any problems.

I tried DX9 in three different PUGs and was getting frame rates in the 40s during battle, but with DX11 I get frame rates in the 70s during battle so I would rather not use DX9 if at all possible. I already knew this would be the case, but tried it anyway just to make sure.

Read up about it here on the forums. It is a bug that is simply never talked about as far as helping anyone.

It seems like I fixed mine by deleting a lot of stuff including MWO and installing it again.

I know it well....................

I wounder if running the MWO Repair Tool would fix it, did you try that before re-installing the whole thing?

Definitely run the repair tool first. Good luck. Which graphics card are you using?

If DX11 is what is crashing your system, your choice is pretty much trading 30 frames or having it crash every other game.

DX11 is not a magic bullet, just because it works well in other games doesn't mean it works in MWO. The implementation of DX11 in MWO has been terrible since day 1. If you were here in those days, you'd know that the first implementation of DX11 in MWO not only ran more poorly (lower FPS), but also had severe graphical glitches like parts of mechs disappearing entirely.

Don't take my word for it. Run DX9 for a week and see if you still get any crashes. I am at least 50% sure you won't.

Go ahead and try the usual fixes, clear shaders, run repair tool, uninstall and delete everything before reinstalling. If any of those work, great. If not, you know you have one final fallback.

I ran the MWO Repair Tool yesterday afternoon and so far no crashing. Today I even tried running a bunch of other programs while I was in the game to try to make it crash and it didn't. I think the MWO Repair Tool fixed it.

Thank you to everybody for your help.
