I have seen a few mentions of the skill gap and how that may effect new players coming in. When I started I had zero First Person Shooter experience in 10 years and what I did have was minimal. Luckily for me within a few months of starting they introduced Tier System which made things MUCH easier for me. I stated at the BOTTOM of tier 5 and what I have noticed about the current skill gap is this....

As soon as the tiers were introduced and settled a bit my average damage when up 100 points and my score were much more consistent as I was not running into tier 1 and 2 players that would slaughter me. At the bottom of a new tier I will average 300 damage or so (end of tier 5 and 4). By the time a get to the end of a tier I am averaging around 700 damage.

As long as you know to expect the drop off you should not get do disappointed. This difference can be further minimized by adding tiers. Currently I only ever wait for matches when it get late in Western Europe and most people on the East Coast are at work still. Even then I only wait a short time because the system will start looking in higher tiers.

At this point I doubt adding another tier would impact wait times and it might further reduce any perceived skill gap.

Dropping in the team queue is a little different becasue it uses a weighted average for the teams, so you will get bigger skill gaps. This will either get you killed or cure you of the PUGing tendency to be a lone ranger.

So are you saying that when you started at Tier 4 you were doing 300 points of damage on average and by the time you reached Tier 3 you were again averaging 700 points of damage? And that sort of experience has been repeated through every tier?

What tier are you now may I ask?

As a T3 my averages are about the same and have been since I was at the bottom of T5. All depends on the mechs I am attempting to master and the frequency of my play (and the booze) but my long term stats certainly don't suggest that I have ever had that sort of shift during any period of play regardless of tier.

I don't understand the tier system.

I'm very bad, often only doing 50 to 80 damage and the systems states that I'm T2.
