Greetings MechWarriors. Today I have a few simple questions. Why does it seem like jokes of how PGI should perform weapon balance or game design in general are taken a bit... seriously? Are we at a point where one cannot even jest of nerfing machine guns, which are now in an OK place, plus or minus 0.05 DPS.

Perhaps I'm simply not getting satire correct for this community. Are there better examples than my own or just something that I'm missing?

There are just alot of salty old fish hanging around the forums who were salted up years ago but to this day remain bitter and unforgiving of everything now. It's not their fault if they find it painful to joke about something that they have seen "ruined" time and time again. But that being said, don't let them stop you from having a sense of humour.

I have a different take than roboPrancer. Someone at PGI just might take a "joke" seriously and think it was a "good idea". It's a highly probable risk that should best be avoided. Posted Image

Because PGI makes decisions that make no sense (like the cUAC quirks on the Mist Lynx), and even making jokes about what could be taken seriously by PGI and implemented. Basically, I'm bloody paranoid.

That assumes that they read their own forum. Tina only stops by on rare occasion. We can't let paranoia ruin our chance to have fun on these forums.

A horse walks into a bar. The bartender knows this horse is a regular and asks "hey horse, I sees you in here pretty often. Are you an alcoholic?"
The horse replies, "I think not!" And poof, he disapears.

Now many philosophers are family with the concept of Cogito Ergo Sum, or, "I think, therefore I am",
but to explain that before telling the joke would be putting Descartes before the horse.

Waka waka

Perhaps it's the quality of humor..

Steve Wright would be proud of that one, and so am I.

But to the OPs point.
Some time ago, I made a post mentioning PGI by name a couple times NOT realizing my auto correct had changed PGI to PIG.
At first I thought it was kinda humorous, especially since it was a sincere mistake. But then I considered what i perceive as already battered personalities not thinking it was the least bit funny, and changed the post.

Just saying..

Oh, and thanks.

"Humor" "Jest" "Satire"

Hmm. I am not certain that everyone in this community, and especially the devs, understands these concepts let alone those of proportionality, balance or even the nature of games.

I mean come on. Just look at recent history: The community complained about a need to nerf the Kodiak 3 and BAM! the devs nerf the Shadow Hawk 3M and a few others claiming UAC "data" necessitated this. Now when that happened, as a member of the playing community you would have been justified thinking "well this is obviously a joke". I know I thought they were being funny. But it turns out it wasn't a joke after all. Nope. They really expected us to buy their claim that mechs like the Enforcer 5P and Shadow Hawk 3M were "over performing". Who's laughing now?

But forget the devs and their slap-stick routine. Consider too the community. Go check out some of the threads over in action Play. There are people in there who have argued -apparently with honest sincerity- that this game should be quite literally treated as if it is a life and death experience. That their keyboard manipulation of a virtual stompy robot from outer space involves personal acts of bravery and sacrifice akin to a soldier in actual battle. Some have put forth that the desire...no, NEED...to win a match in this here video game is in no way different than that of a top level athlete having trained their whole life for a shot in the Olympics.

And you think these sorts of folks should be a bit more open to gentle mockey and a few jokes?

Good luck.

Edit (and keep at it)

Hahaha. You don't want to know what they're doing to the Kodiak in the February patch, then. Posted Image

Whenever I poke my head into threads involving CW/FW/FP, all I really get from them is this playing out..

Cazidin is right, sometimes no one is laughing here. But mostly in games where the other players are all run by the VIP AI ™. Cazidin says the machine guns are okay. But he doesn't realize that their rate of fire is only X, or up to 1.5X on quirked mechs. Clearly in lore the rate of fire is supposed to be Y.

on mobile, simply type [.img] (Insert gif image link here [/img] and then post.

For here you can simply just click the picture in the box toolbar where you type to post and copy the images link into the new bubble that pops up, then click ok. (note, the bubble says images properties if you've clicked the right one.
