Lore wise if I am not mistaken, it was designed as a much needed counter to the clans, similar to the black knight in that respect. Though they really got the black knight wrong in this game.

I can see what you mean. You probably think of ComStar's Clanbuster variant of the Black Knight, but the chassis itself predates the Clans by some centuries.

The Bushwacker also was devised before the Clans invaded, even if it needed inspiration from a Clan Mech to be completed. It was then used to replace medium Mech losses and was well underway to become the standard Mech of the FedCom. As such it saw a lot of combat against the Clans. And obviously the exploits of the Somerset Strikers and their prototype Bushwacker is memorable, too.

So the Bushwacker ended up being the counter to Clans (and boy did it well as such, ask the Jaguars...), but it was not meant to be originally. And it shows. I mean take a look at the Mech: designed for long and midrange combat, it would be hopelessly outgunned attempting long range combat with the Clan Mechs.
They figured that out pretty quickly and therefore the later variants are better suited in mid and close range combat. Too bad we don't get to use the BSW-L1 and BSW-S2r...

Giving the Bushwacker MG quirks is actually the right thing to do. PGI did a good job here.

I will explain.
  • Bushwacker is one of several Iconic mechs in MWO that carry MGs stock. Other examples include CPLT-K2, Battlemaster, Thunderbolt, RVN-4X and Phoenix Hawk.
  • As a rule of thumb, MGs are not useful in MWO unless boated (4+ of them) or unless they have MG quirks.
  • The only way to let players enjoy those Iconic mechs with something close to stock builds (for nostalgia), is to give quirks to builds that would not otherwise be viable. After all, many of us are trying to recreate Battletech / Mechwarrior partially as we remember it from TT or video games.
  • As long as these mechs have other quirks too, there's literally no drawback to giving them some MG RoF quirks in order to allow for more than a few meta builds. People are going to use the Bushie to boat UAC5s or SRMs or Large Lasers no matter what. But now we can have some MG builds too, perhaps.
I wish PGI did more of this. There are literally no drawbacks. Giving weapon quirks is not a zero sum game.

Doesn't the 2 Ballistic one have 20% MG RoF quirks?
To promote that, they'd need a 100% MG RoF quirk (or 4x effective MGs)
200% wouldn't be unreasonable, at 6x (1+2=3x) effectiveness
I think that's how RoF quirks work...

They're a wasted quirk at under 3 effective MG, let alone the minimally viable 4

I am one of the biggest proponents of more effective MGs in MWO, so I'd love for MG quirks to be better on this mech and most other mechs. I find it absolutely hi-lar-i-ous that PGI nerfed MG quirks on the Viper and Kit Fox in a recent patch, because it's not like they want to "normalize" MGs before the upcoming MG buff in February or anything like that. And it's not like MG-boating Kit Foxes and Vipers were leaving a trail of destruction in their wake.

But I don't think it was a waste of a quirk anymore than the LCT-3V's bad energy quirks are waste of quirks. They're just... not as big as they should be. 50% of the time, PGI will go and increase these quirks later, like they did with PXH quirks.

60 to 90 days later...
